Saints Weekend Wrap November 13 2022

Saints Men’s Basketball Come out on Short End of 2OT Thriller

The St. Clair College Men’s Basketball team were involved in a great basketball game at the SportsPlex Sunday afternoon but came out on the short end and lost 127-125 in double overtime to Mohawk College (Hamilton). This was the first loss in the regular season for the Saints and drops their OCAA West Division record to 3-1.

In a contest that saw 13 ties and 14 lead changes, St. Clair was able to secure control in the early stages with a slim but high scoring first quarter advantage of 30-25. The Saints had their largest lead of the game at 11 points in the second quarter and entered halftime up 55-46. Mohawk turned on the heat putting up 31 points in the third quarter while shooting 55%, but St. Clair nearly matched them with 29 of their own to still hold an 84-77 lead entering the fourth.

However, Mohawk’s hot shooting maintained in the fourth quarter and split a pair of free throws in the final minute forced overtime with a 106-106 deadlock. The first overtime did not decide a winner and Mohawk used a 3-point make with under a minute to play to knot the game at 116-116. In the final frame the Saints were able to go ahead by 6-points but could not hold on down the stretch. Mohawk secured two separate offensive rebounds after failed trips to the free throw line which proved to be the decisive blow.

St. Clair’s Shakael Pryce (Pickering, ON) scored a game high 34 points adding 5 rebounds and 7 assists in a losing cause. Terence Williams (Windsor, ON) recorded a double-double with 24 points and 10 rebounds while teammate Darnelle Peddie (Pickering, ON) stepped up his role with 22 points off the bench. Jalen Harmon (Ypsilanti, MI) fell a rebound short of double-double with 14 points and 9 boards for St. Clair. Hanani Ujullu (Kitchener, ON) chipped in with 12 points for the Saints and Jesiah Deerr (Whitby, ON) also reached double figures with 10 points.

St. Clair outscored Mohawk in the paint by a margin of 64-32 but the visitors were much better from distance making 41% (19-for-46) which was a difference maker.

Mohawk’s Daniel Graham (Hamilton, ON) scored 29 points and set up his teammates with 7 assists in the win.

St. Clair next goes on the road with OCAA West Division games at Humber College (Etobicoke) on Saturday and Sheridan College (Brampton) on Sunday.

St. Clair Women’s Basketball Lose 66-62 to Mohawk

The St. Clair College Women’s Basketball team fell 66-62 to Mohawk College (Hamilton) Sunday afternoon at the SportsPlex and now hold a 1-2 record in the OCAA’s West Division.

A bad shooting night for the Saints started early as Mohawk pulled ahead 19-9 after the first quarter. St. Clair had their best effort in the second quarter and righted the ship but still trailed 34-28 at the intermission. The Saints continued to cut into the deficit and tied the game (44-44) with 2:35 to play in the third quarter but Mohawk remained in front 48-46 heading to the final frame. St. Clair tied the game mid-way through the fourth and again with just over two minutes to play but each time Mohawk answered to create the final cushion.

Even though St. Clair was +25 in shot attempts they only converted 21% and allowed Mohawk to gain their first win of the season. Mohawk outscored the Saints 31-0 in bench production and 32-16 in points around the basket which were also key statistical differences.

Alyssa Lucier (Wallaceburg, ON) led the Saints with a game high 22 points to go with 8 rebounds and 4 steals. Lauren Overeem (Brantford, ON) recorded a double-double with 13 rebounds and 12 points while Janae Smith (Warren, MI) had a nice overall game with 12 points, 8 rebounds, 4 assists and 6 steals.

Tia Stys (St. Catharines, ON) had a double-double scoring 10 points and clearing 10 rebounds for Mohawk in the win with teammate Donna-Marie Borja (Calgary, AB) also chipping in with 10 points.

The Saints continue their OCAA West schedule with road games at Humber College (Etobicoke) on Saturday and Sheridan College (Brampton) on Sunday.

St. Clair Men’s Volleyball Earn Split on the Road

The St. Clair men’s volleyball team continued their OCAA regular season schedule on the road for two games this weekend and came away with a split in two tough exciting matches with both going to 5 sets.

On Friday night, the Saints were in Ancaster to take on the Redeemer University Royals and suffered a heartbreaking 3-2 loss. All but one set was decided by the minimum two points. Set scores for Redeemer were 29-27, 24-26, 23-25, 25-19 and 15-13. Second year middle Jonah Certossi (Belle River; Belle River District) had a huge game in the losing effort with 18 kills, 9 stuff blocks, 1 assist and 3 digs. Second year middle Zach Walls (Amhertsburg; Villanova) had a great game as well with 9 kills, and 7 stuff blocks. Setter Nick Kwiatkowski (Essex; Essex District) had a solid game as well with 34 assists, 1 kill, 6 service aces and 4 stuff blocks.

With the win Redeemer improved to 3-2 on the season. The Royals are ranked 5th in Ontario.

The men were in Hamilton on Saturday afternoon to take on the Mohawk Mountaineers and this time came out on the right side of another 3-2 entertaining game. Set scores for St. Clair were 21-25, 25-21, 24-26, 25-20 and 15-13. Second year outside hitter Marc Galipeau (LaSalle; Sandwich) led the way offensively for St. Clair as he was a plus 21 and some very strong serving throughout the match. Rookie outside hitter Kale Wilkinson (Windsor; Riverside) also had a strong game going plus 14 with some great passing.

With the loss Mohawk’s record dropped to 3-2. The Mountaineers are ranked 4th in the OCAA.

With the split on the weekend St. Clair’s record now sits at 3-3. The Saints are next in action at home at the Sportsplex on Saturday, November 19 at 3 pm against the Humber Hawks for their first of three straight home matches.

St. Clair Women’s Volleyball Split to Fall to 5-1

The St. Clair women’s volleyball team continued their OCAA regular season schedule on the road for two games this weekend and came away with a split in two tough exciting matches.

On Friday night, the Saints were in Ancaster to take on the Redeemer University Royals and came away with a hard fought 3-2 win. Set scores for St. Clair were 25-23, 27-25, 17-25, 16-25 and 15-13. Ashley Maleyko (LaSalle; Villanova) had a big game with 10 kills, 2 assists, 2 aces and 12 digs. Geneva Huisman (Amherstburg; Marantha Christian) had a great game as well with 10 kills, 1 service ace and 1 stuff block.

With loss Redeemer fell to 3-2 on the season. The Royals are ranked 7th in Ontario.

The women were Hamilton on Saturday afternoon to take on the Mohawk Mountaineers in a battle of two unbeaten squads. The Saints got off to a great start winning the first set but ran out of gas losing the next three tight sets. Set scores for Mohawk were 24-26, 25-23, 25-23 and 25-20. Huisman led the way offensively for St. Clair with 9 kills, 1 service ace, and 1 stuff blocks. Maleyko also chipped in with 9 kills and 1 stuff block.

With the win Mohawk’s record improved to 5-0. The Mountaineers are ranked 3rd in the OCAA.

With the split on the weekend St. Clair’s record now sits at 5-1. The Saints are ranked 4th in Ontario. The St. Clair women are next in action at home at the Sportsplex on Saturday, November 19 at 1 pm against the top ranked Humber Hawks for their first of three straight home matches.

St. Clair Indoor Cricket Team Wins Tournament

St. Clair College’s extramural indoor cricket team was in Toronto on Friday to take part in their second tournament of the season at Humber College.

It was a successful day for the Saints as they walked away Champions of the event going 5-0 for the day.

St. Clair started the day defeating host Humber 53-43. After a short break the Saints then went on to defeat Fanshawe College by 45 runs. St. Clair wrapped up pool play by taking down Centennial College by 9 wickets.

By going 3-0 in pool play St. Clair qualified for the semi-final against Conestoga College and came away with a convincing 67-29 win to qualify for the Championship match against Centennial.

The Saints had a great match and came away with a 60-44 win to capture the tournament Champions title.

The Best Batsman of the tournament was Gaganjot Singh while Rushabkumar Patel was named tournament MVP.
