St. Clair Saints Men’s and Women’s Volleyball on the Road
St. Clair College Women’s Volleyball
by Jay Shewfelt – The St. Clair College women’s volleyball team travelled to the Metro Toronto area this weekend and came away with a well earned split.
On Saturday, the Saints were in Oakville to take on the Sheridan Bruins. St. Clair came away with a hard fought back and forth 3-2 win. Game scores for St. Clair were 21-15, 28-26, 25-22, 21-25, and 15-9.The Saints were led by Shalena Horst who had 10 kills, 2 stuff blocks, 1 service ace and 6 digs. With the loss Sheridan’s record fell to 6-7. The Bruins are ranked 8th in Ontario.
On Sunday, the Saints travelled to Etobicoke to take on the top ranked and undefeated Humber Hawks. After a hard fought first set which the Saints lost 25-22 Humber took the next two sets easily by scores of 25-16 and 25-18. St. Clair had a strong match from Jessica Masse who had 8 kills and 2 digs. With the win the Hawks improved to 12-0 on the season. The Humber women are ranked 1st in Ontario and 3rd in Canada.
With the split the Saints are not 7-6 on the season and tied for fourth place in the tight OCAA West Division with two other teams. The top 6 teams qualify for the playoffs. St. Clair is next in action on Friday, January 29 when they host the Mohawk Mountaineers at 6 pm at the Sportsplex.

The team travelled to the Metro Toronto area this weekend for two matches and came away with a big upset win.
On Sunday, the Saints travelled to Etobicoke to take on the Humber Hawks and defeated them in convincing fashion with 3-0 win. Game scores for St. Clair were 25-21, 25-21 and 25-23. It was a solid team effort with all 7 starters contributing significantly. Middle Stephen Carter led the way with 5 kills, 3 stuff blocks and 3 digs. Keaton Rebkowec also had a solid match with 6 kills and 3 service aces. With the loss Humber fell to 7-5 on the season. The Humber men are ranked 4th in Ontario and 12th in Canada. It is the first time ever St. Clair has defeated Humber on their home court.
On Saturday, the Saints were in Oakville to take on the Sheridan Bruins. St. Clair struggled on the night and suffered a 3-0 loss. Game scores for Sheridan were 25-13, 25-18 and 25-18. The Saints were led by Jared Niziolek who had 4 kills, 3 stuff blocks, and 2 digs. With the win Sheridan’s record improved to 8-5 . The Bruins are ranked 6th in Ontario and have won 5 of their last 6 matches.
With the split the Saints are now 3-10 on the season and are in 7th place in the tough OCAA West Division. The top 6 teams qualify for the playoffs. St. Clair is next in action on Friday, January 29 when they host the Mohawk Mountaineers at 8 pm at the Sportsplex.
