Celebrating the Growth of Soccer in Canada with a Community Viewing Event
The remarkable rise of soccer in Canada continues to capture the attention of fans nationwide, and local Amherstburg businesses are inviting the community to come together to celebrate.
In 2007, local business owner and former sports executive Richard Peddie was instrumental in launching Toronto FC and helping to build a dedicated soccer stadium. At the time, research indicated that approximately 5 million Canadians were following the sport. Today, that number has grown to more than 12 million today, representing an increase of over 100% in just a few short years. Following Canada’s recent international victory, that number is expected to climb even higher, reflecting the country’s growing enthusiasm for the game.
The passion for soccer remains strong and this weekend that passion comes to life in Amherstburg.
River Bookshop and Evelyn’s Candy House are inviting visitors to join in the excitement with a community viewing event taking place outside the shop at 67 Richmond Street. Guests are encouraged to gather and watch the game together and show their team spirit. Attendees will have the chance to win soccer-themed prizes throughout the event.
“My days leading Maple Leaf Sports and Toronto FC are long past, but I am still a “footie” fan – wear their colours and root for their success,” said Richard Peddie. “Our River Bookshop in Amherstburg may be miles from the action this Saturday but it’s not stopping us from celebrating.”
Kick-off for the viewing begins at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, July 4 in front of the bookshop and candy store in the Open Air footprint. Everyone is welcome to attend.
