Vallée adds Sofia Kennedy for 2019-20

The Windsor Lancer women’s basketball team is excited to announce the signing of Sofia Kennedy of Christchurch, New Zealand for the 2019-20 season. The 5’7 guard is known for her speed and her handles and will be a welcome addition to the Lancer backcourt.

Most recently, Sofia played for the Canterbury Wildcats in her hometown of Christchurch. The Wildcats compete in the first division in New Zealand’s Women’s Basketball Championship (WBC). Prior to making the jump to the Wildcats, Sofia suited up for her high school, Middleton Grange, where she made her mark as a top student athlete, excelling both on the court and in the classroom. Her excellence on the court earned her the title of MVP of her Middleton Grange squad in 2018 while her strong leadership skills earned her the title of team captain.

No stranger to big moments, Sofia has had the honour of representing her country in not one, but two sports. She was named as a reserve on the Junior Tall Ferns (New Zealand’s U18 Basketball Team) which competed in the FIBA U17 Oceania Championships in Guam in 2017 before officially joining the roster for the FIBA U18 Women’s Asian Championship which took place in India. In addition, Sofia is an excellent cross country runner who has most recently worn the black singlet for the New Zealand Secondary Schools team that competed at the World Championships in Paris. Her fourth place finish in the 100-strong race helped her New Zealand team earn a bronze medal at the event.

Her excellence on the court, the course, and in the classroom gave Sofia her pick of post-secondary options, but she knew she wanted to play basketball at the next level and believes Windsor is the right fit for her. “I’m excited to study at Windsor because of the high level of education, the basketball program,” said Kennedy. “I’m also really excited to be coached by Coach Vallee, and look forward to learning from her.”

“I am excited to welcome Sofia to our Lancer team. She is quite an accomplished athlete and I enjoyed getting to know how much she focused on training with the goal of getting a university scholarship,” said Vallée. “Her focus and determination and resilience are impressive. She understands the game, sees the floor well, possesses great passing abilities and can be a lock down defender. She will quickly make a name for herself with her defense and tenacity.” – Lancers Head Coach Vallee

This fall, Sofia will be pursuing a degree in Environmental Studies.

The Lancers kick off their 2019-20 regular season on Wednesday, October 23rd at 6:00pm when they host the Western Mustangs at the Fairall Fieldhouse.
