Spitfires Drop 2022 Season Opener OT to Sting

Ty Voit scored the winner in overtime and Ben Gaudreau made 22 saves as the Sarnia Sting defeated the Windsor Spitfires 2-1 on Saturday night at the WFCU Centre.

The win was the second in two nights for the Sting, who defeated the Kitchener Rangers 6-3 on the road the previous night. The contest was the 2022-2023 Ontario Hockey League season opener for the Spitfires.

After scoreless first and second periods, Alexis Daviault opened the scoring in the game just under six minutes into the final frame before Noah Morneau, with the first of his OHL career, got the Spitfires back to even terms on a shorthanded effort when he one-timed a backhand cross-ice pass from Jacob Maillet 97 seconds later.

Voit scored the winner on the opening shift and only shot in extra time.

Overage netminder Matt Onuska was stellar in making 26 saves for the Spitfires but his effort was equalized at the other end by Gaudreau. The Windsor netminder was named the third star of the game while the Sarnia puckstopper was the game’s second star. Top star on the night was Voit.

Next action for the Spitfires is Thursday, October 6 when they host the Sudbury Wolves at the WFCU Centre. Opening face-off is set for 705 pm.
