Windsor Spitfires Break Barrie Colts at WFCU Centre
Gabriel Vilardi scored a goal and added two assists and Michael DiPietro made 24 saves as the Windsor Spitfires defeated the Barrie Colts 6-3 at the WFCU Centre in Windsor Sunday afternoon.
Julius Nattinen scored his first goal of the season against against the team that traded him to Windsor during the off-season while Logan Brown, Sean Day, Aaron Luchuk and Cristiano DiGiacinto had the other goals for the Spitfires (12-4-0) who stretched their winning streak to five games.
Rookie centre Tyler Angle, playing in his 10th game of the season, picked up his first career Ontario Hockey League point by assisting on Day’s second period goal.
Defenceman Mikhail Sergachev, the first round pick of the Montreal Canadiens last summer, chipped in with two assists in his second game since being returned to Windsor by the NHL club last week.
Matt Brassard, Giordano Finoro and Kirill Nizhnikov all scored their goals in the third period for the Colts (6-10-2-0) while Christian Propp made 8 saves before being replaced after the first period by David Ovsjannikov, who made 22 stops over the final two periods. Both Barrie netminders surrendered 3 goals apiece.
Special teams played a large role in deciding the outcome of the game as the Spitfires’ league-leading powerplay cashed in once while the Colts could not capitalize on any of their 6 opportunities with the man advantage.
The Spitfires are now off until next Saturday afternoon when they play the Flint Firebirds at the Dort Federal Event Center in Flint.
