Spitfires Game Recap Oct 29

Jalen Chatfield scored the overtime winner and Mario Culina made 25 saves as the Windsor Spitfires defeated the North Bay Battalion 5-4 at the WFCU Centre in Windsor Saturday night.

Aaron Luchuk and Jeremiah Addison both scored two goals to pace the Spitfires (10-4-0) offensively while Julius Nattinen chipped in with three assists, including one on Chatfield’s overtime winner.

Chatfield’s goal was his third of the season and his second overtime (London) winner as well.

The game was perhaps the worst defensive performance of the season for the Spitfires, who were guilty of turn-overs throughout the game in all areas of the ice. The miscues led to the Battalion coming back three times in the game to tie up the score and Culina, making his first start of the season at home, was stellar when called upon to cover the miscues of his teammates virtually all night long.

Brett Hargrave, Brett McKenzie, Steve Harland and former Spitfire Danil Vertiy scored for the Battalion (7-6-1-0) while Mat Woroniuk, making just his second career Ontario Hockey League start, made 23 stops for the visitors.

With their second straight win the Spitfires vaulted to the top of both the OHL’s West Division and second overall in the Western Conference standings with 20 points.

The Spitfires are now off until next Thursday night when they play host to the Saginaw Spirit.
