Sting Defeat Spitfires 5-2 to Cut Windsor’s Lead in Play-Off Series in Half

The Sarnia Sting defeated the Windsor Spitfires 5-2 Tuesday night to cut the Spitfires’ lead in the Ontario Hockey League Western Conference quarter-final series in half. Playing for the first time at the Progressive Auto Sales Arena in Sarnia, the Sting scored four powerplay goals and Ben Gaudreau made 31 saves to pick up their first win of the series.

Ty Voit, Max Namestnikov, Ethan Ritchie and Nolan DeGurse all scored for Sarnia while playing with the man advantage as the Sting (1-2) scored their first extra player goals of the series and Nolan Dann chipped in with four assists. Ethan Miedema and Ryan Abraham both replied with goals for the Spitfires (2-1), who did not capitalize on any of the five chances while playing with the extra man. DeGurse scored into an empty net late in the third period to round out the scoring in the contest.

Matt Onuska made 18 saves for the Spitfires

The series opened last Thursday, April 21, at the WFCU Centre with the Spitfires emerging with a 3-0 win. Alex Christopoulos, Andrew Perrott and James Jodoin all scored for Windsor (1-0) while Onuska made 11 saves to pick up his first career OHL shutout. Gaudreau made 25 stops for the Sting (0-1) in the series’ opener.

The series resumed two nights later at the WFCU Centre and the Spitfires emerged with a 4-1 win on goals by Daniel D’Amico and Pasquale Zito and Will Cuylle with two. Wyatt Johnston, who won the OHL scoring title during the 2021-2022 regular season, had three assists while Dann had the only goal for Sarnia. Onuska made 22 saves for the Spitfires (2-0) to pick up the win in net while Gaudreau made 39 saves for the Sting (0-2) at the other end of the ice.

Game three of the series goes Thursday, April 28 at the Progressive Auto Sales Arena before the teams return to the WFCU Centre on Saturday, April 30. Opening face-off for both games is 7:05 pm.
