Spitfires Stun Greyhounds on the Road
The Windsor Spitfires exploded for five unanswered goals in the third period to stun the Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds Friday night at the Essar Centre.
Trailing 2-0 after 40 minutes of play, the Spitfires (2-0-0) struck for three goals in just under four minutes early in the third period on markers by Hayden McCool, Cristiano DiGiacinto and Cole Purboo to suddenly turn the tide of the game and take a 3-2 lead. Aaron Luchuk would later add an insurance goal before Andrew Burns scored into an empty net to salt the game away for the Spits.
First year defence Austin McEneny, who played in the Quebec Major Junior A Hockey League with the Quebec Remparts last season before signing with the Spitfires as a free agent earlier this month, had four assists in the game enroute to being named the contest’s first star while rookie right-winger Cole Purboo’s second goal of the young season was his second straight game-wining goal.
Morgan Frost and Liam Hawel scored for the Greyhounds (0-1-0) who were playing their first game of the 2016-2017 OHL season.
Soo native Mario Culina, who signed with the Spitfires as a free agent last season, made 24 saves to pick up the win in goal while Matthew Villalta made 20 stops at the other end of the ice for the ‘Hounds.
The Spitfires are now off until next Thursday night when they play a return match at home against the Greyhounds at the WFCU Centre.
