Windsor Spitfires Take on Saginaw Spirit in Farewell to the Joe Game
The Saginaw Spirit and the Windsor Spitfires will play a game at Joe Louis Arena as a “Farewell to the Joe” in Detroit on Sunday, December 4th at 4pm.
The Spitfires will face the Spirit as the clubs and the league pay tribute to the final season of the historic venue, where former Ontario Hockey League greats like Steve Yzerman, Kris Draper and Brendan Shanahan once starred. “We’re excited to be part of another historic hockey event in the city of Detroit,” General Manager Warren Rychel said. “Our players, fans and staff all had an amazing experience at the (Comerica Park) outdoor game back in 2013. The chance to play at the Joe, one of the great shrines of the hockey world, is another opportunity to share a once-in-a-lifetime experience with our fans and the families of our players.”
In addition to the greats who played for the Red Wings there, the Joe has a significant connection to junior hockey. The Detroit Junior Red Wings won an Ontario Hockey League title while calling the venue home back in 1995.
