The St. Clair Saints Football team moved to 2-0 with a 50-0 shutout win over the Ottawa Sooners in sweltering hot conditions Saturday afternoon at Lees Field on the campus of the University of Ottawa.
The Saints got on the board five minutes into the contest as running back MJ Doyle-Marshall (Airdrie, AB) dashed into the endzone for a 3-yard score. Five minutes later quarterback Matthew Guenette (Windsor, ON/Holy Names) linked with Marselio Mendez (West, St. Paul, MN) for a 21-yard major. Following the pattern Guenette shared the wealth with Jayden Shallow (Toronto, ON) for a 20-yard strike as the first quarter clock expired and a 21-0 St. Clair lead entering the second frame.
Brandon Vecchio (Sault Ste. Marie, ON) allowed the defensive side of the ball to enter the scoring four minutes into the second quarter returning a 35-yard interception for a Saints touchdown. Joe Newton-Grain (Oxford, England) added 27-yard field goal for St. Clair with a few minutes to go in the half. The Saints got the ball back quickly and Guenette connected for a second time with Mendez and a 47-yard score made it 48-0 at halftime.
After a scoreless third quarter Newton-Grain split the uprights for a 30-yard field goal followed by an 80-yard kickoff for a rouge point. Tyson Godspower (Coquitlam, BC) had a 6-yard rush for score and Newton-Grain completed the scoring with a single on a missed field goal.
