St. Clair Golf Team Off to OCAA Championship

The scheduled 54-hole tournament runs Monday through Wednesday at Crimson Ridge in Sault Ste. Marie, Ont., and is hosted by Sault College. Last year’s championship was part of a conference-wide cancelation as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The tournament consists of three 18-hole rounds, weather permitting. The male and female player posting the lowest gross score through 54 holes will earn their respective individual championship.

Men’s teams consist of four or five golfers, with the top four individual scores of each round contributing to the total team score. Women’s teams consist of two or three golfers, with the top two individual scores of each round contributing to their total score. Schools with the lowest aggregate of gross scores after 54 holes win the respective team titles.

Student-athletes from 10 schools will compete at the championship, including Confederation College (Thunder Bay), Durham College (Oshawa), Fanshawe College (London), Georgian College (Barrie), Humber College (Etobicoke), Lakehead University (Orillia), Niagara College (Welland), St. Clair College (Windsor), St. Lawrence College (Kingston) and host Sault College.

The St. Clair women will be looking to improve on their 4th place finish at the 2019 Championship. Shannon Coffey (Windsor; FJ Brennan) will be looking to bring home individual gold after winning silver in 2019. Joining Shannon on the women’s team are 2nd year transfer Sophia Fallea (LaSalle; Villanova) and 2nd year player Megan Schaafsma (Essex; Essex District).

The St. Clair men will also be hoping to move up the standings from 2019. The Saints won the DII Gold which was good for 7th overall out of 11 teams. The Saints are led by 2nd year golfer Andrew Pillon (St. Joachim; Belle River District) who finished 25th overall at the 2019 Championship. Other St. Clair team members are Simon Desmarais (3rd Year; Windsor; FJ Brennan), Brad Roughton (2nd Year; Belle River; Belle River District), Kyle Hameliy (1st Year; Burlington; Corpus Christi) and Kayden Stammler (1st Year; Comber; Kingsville District)

The Saints are coached by head coach Kevin Corriveau and assistant coaches Heather MacKenzie, Jordan Schatz and Ron Swift.

The top OCAA golfers and teams will move on to compete at the 2021 Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) Golf National Championships, presented by PING. The event takes place at the Ambassador Golf Club in Windsor, Ont., from Oct. 11-15 and is hosted by St. Clair. The Saints will receive automatic entry as the host college.
