St. Clair Golf Teams Bring Home Hardware

The St. Clair College golf teams wrapped up play on Friday at the Canadian Colleges Athletic Association (CCAA) Championships presented by PING and came home with some hardware. The event was hosted by Humber College at Red Crest Golf Club.

Spencer Higginbottom (Lakeshore; Tecumseh Vista) had another great round shooting a 75 and was named a CCAA All Canadian finishing in a tie for 8th place overall with a four day total of 304. Higginbottom is the first St. Clair male golfer in history to win this prestigious award. Simon Moir (London; St. Thomas Aquinas) was the low Saint on the day shooting a 1 under 70 and finished the Championship tied for 13th.

The St. Clair men’s team ended the four day tournament in 4th place in Canada with an outstanding final round. The Saints shot the lowest round of the day with a total of 294 but their comeback came up just short of a team medal. It was the second straight season since 2009 that the St. Clair men took part in the national tournament and second consecutive 4th place finish. The future is bright for the Saints men with 5 of the 7 players on the roster eligible to return next season.

Alyssa Cowling (Oldcastle; Villanova) also had a strong final round shooting her best round of the tournament with a 4 over 75. Cowling finished in 5th place overall and also was named a CCAA All Canadian. Alyssa is the third female golfer in St. Clair history to win this award.

Cowling and teammate Justine Gorham (Amherstburg; L’Essor) also won a Bronze medal in the women’s conference competition as members of OCAA Team Two. Gorham was also awarded the CCAA Exemplary Leadership award at the closing ceremonies. Both Cowling and Gorham are expected to be back next season.

The Saints are coached by Head Coach Kevin Corriveau and assistant coaches David Byrne and Chris Meloche.

Golfers representing twelve Canadian colleges from Ontario, Alberta and Quebec took part in the event.

The tournament consisted of four 18-hole rounds. The men’s and women’s player posting the lowest gross score through 72 holes won their respective individual championship.

Men’s teams consist of five golfers, with the top four individual scores of each round contributing to the total team score. Schools with the lowest aggregate of gross scores after 72 holes win the respective team titles.

The women’s team competition is a conference based event with 3 players on each conference team and the top 2 counting each day.
