St. Clair Women’s Soccer Fall Just Short of Huge Upset

The St. Clair women’s soccer team suffered a heartbreaking loss on Saturday afternoon in OCAA Playoff action.

The women put up a valiant effort but ended up falling 1-0 in overtime to the top ranked Algonquin Thunder to end their season. In a very even back and forth match the Thunder scored the winning goal in the 101st minute of overtime.

Saints keeper Alex Samping (Windsor; Holy Names) had a great game turning aside 14 of 15 shots on goal and had no chance on the winning goal. The Thunder keeper was great as well stopping all 10 shots she faced. St. Clair defenders Ravneet Rana (Windsor; Riverside) and Charesse Thomas-Tate (Brampton; St. Thomas Aquinas) had great games on the back end against a potent Algonquin offense that averaged over 4 goals a game during the regular season.

The Saints ended the regular season in 6th place in the tough OCAA West Division with a record of 5-4. Algonquin Thunder was 8-1 which was good enough for 2nd in East. The St. Clair women are currently ranked 10th in the OCAA while Algonquin are ranked 3rd in Ontario and 10th in Canada. The Thunder have advanced to the OCAA Championship quarter-final on Wednesday in Ancaster.
