The St. Clair College Department of Athletics and Recreation is announcing the resignation of Women’s Soccer Head Coach Steve Vagnini effective immediately

Steve Vagnini has accepted the position of head coach with the University of Windsor Men’s soccer program.

Vagnini has spent three seasons as the women’s outdoor soccer head coach and four seasons as the indoor coach after being hired in the fall of 2013. Under Steve’s leadership the women’s soccer programs have turned around significantly and become one of the most consistent and top performing programs in Ontario.

Over three seasons with the outdoor program Vagnini compiled a regular season record of 20-4-4 and a playoff record of 5-4 including a bronze medal in the fall of 2015; St. Clair’s first medal in women’s outdoor soccer since 1999. For the indoor program he has achieved a record of 20-4-7 at the Regional and Provincial Championships including a Gold Medal in 2015 and a silver in 2017.

During his time at St. Clair Vagnini was named OCAA Women’s Soccer Coach of the Year in 2014, 2015, and 2016.  Steve was honoured as the CCAA Coach of the Year in 2015.

“St. Clair College has been one of my best soccer experiences. The staff, administration, students and athletes were amazing and I can’t thank everyone enough for giving me the chance to fulfill my potential at such an amazing academic institution,” stated Vagnini.

“We are very sad to be losing Steve Vagnini from our women’s soccer program. He has been a huge asset to the athletic department and turned our women’s program into one of the best in Ontario. We wish him all the best in his future endeavours and can’t thank him enough for all of his time, effort and dedication,” stated St. Clair Vice President Ron Seguin.

The search for a replacement for the head coach of the women’s soccer program will begin immediately.

Widely considered as one of the top coaches in the province, Vagini has an outstanding record as a winning coach at all levels. He rejoins the Lancers from St. Clair College where he spent the past four seasons as the head coach of the Saints women’s soccer program.

“It is a pleasure to have Steve rejoin the Lancers in this new role,” commented Havey. “Steve is an experienced and accomplished coach and under his leadership the St. Clair Saints women’s program has flourished, and we are excited to have him take on this leadership role for the men’s soccer program.”

While with the Saints, Vagnini led the club to an Ontario Collegiate Athletic Association (OCAA) bronze medal in 2015, and was named the OCAA coach of the year for three consecutive years from 2014-16. He was also named the Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association coach of the year in 2015.

The Sault Ste. Marie, ON native also led the St. Clair indoor women’s soccer team to a gold medal in 2015, and a silver medal this past March.

A former goaltender with the Lancer men’s soccer team in the late 1980s, Vagnini served as an assistant coach for the men’s team for 12 seasons from 2000-11, and was also the head goaltending coach from 2007-08. In addition, he represented the University of Windsor as the head goaltending coach with Team Canada at the 2011 FISU games in China.

“I am very excited to be back home and feel incredibly honoured to put the Blue & Gold on again,” said Vagnini. “My goal is to unify the program and develop an elite team that will make Lancer history.”

Steve has also been active as a coach at the local club and high school level since originally coming to the University of Windsor. He has previously coached at Holy Names High School and with the East Side Kickers soccer club. He was also the head coach of the Windsor Stars of the Canadian Soccer League for two season, and has also held coaching positons and administrative positons with the Essex County Soccer Association.

The appointment is effective immediately.
