The Pingree Mayor – Meet Detroit’s very first locally crafted sneaker
Meet Detroit’s very first locally crafted sneaker: The Pingree Mayor. Inspired by Hazen S. Pingree, Mayor of Detroit (1889-1897), shoemaker and veteran, each shoe is handmade by our team of US veterans.
A small team of US veterans and Detroit makers at the start-up Pingree Detroit are taking leather “scrap” from the production of 2019 cars in the Detroit Auto Industry and turning it into unique leather accessories and the first sneakers ever made in Detroit.
This emerging social impact business is trying to address challenges facing veterans while creating jobs in Detroit and making the sustainable footwear and fashion accessories of the future.
The Mayor is made from luxurious leather reclaimed from the auto industry. Designed and meticulously crafted with care to last a lifetime, each is stamped with a unique serial number, so it’s yours and yours alone.
Designed and built entirely in Detroit, the Pingree Mayor is the start of something big. They’re not just making some of the finest shoes on the market, they’re establishing Detroit as a footwear capital. They are committed to working with the Motor City’s most innovative, creative designers. They’re always putting our best foot forward– the most stylish, too.
How many products do you own that you know exactly who made them? This team of US Veterans and civilians are proud of their work- as they should be! It takes a pretty gritty group of people to bring shoe making back to Detroit for the first time in nearly 50 years. After years of hard work, research, and training, they’re proud to say that they found that team.
A Team of Civilians and Veterans
They are a worker-owned, social impact company founded in January of 2015 to create resiliency and living wage work for veterans and Detroiters and to create sustainable products that maximize well-being.
The team of Detroit makers handcraft bags, accessories and footwear, using high-quality leather reclaimed from the Detroit auto industry.
Every one of their goods has character and purpose. Just like the people who make it. Right in Detroit!
Today I had the honor of tying the first pair of sneakers made by veterans at Pingree Detroit. pic.twitter.com/yPdG7qJDsY— Mayor Mike Duggan (@MayorMikeDuggan) October 2, 2018
