U of Windsor Announces Men’s Basketball 2022-23 Recruiting Class

University of Windsor Lancer men’s basketball head coach Chris Cheng has announced his recruiting class for the 2022-23 season.

Joining the Blue & Gold in the fall are Windsor natives Quinn Carey and Najee Brown-Henderson, guards Daniel Cummings, Yohann Sam, Jomel Puno, and centres Isaiah Scipio and Andrew Brayall.

“Overall, I am very happy with the recruiting class my staff and I were able to put together,” commented Coach Cheng. “Not only did we add size, length, and enhanced skill sets, but we also brought in good students and people. We feel we checked marked all the needs for this upcoming season.”

Cheng thinks very highly of his recruiting class and had plenty of positive things to say about the impact they will have on the blue and gold this season.

  • Quinn Carey
  • Position: Guard, Height: 6’1
  • Hometown: Windsor, ON
  • Previous Team/High School: Riverside Secondary School
  • UWindsor Program: Human Kinetics

“Quinn captured my eye three years ago. A son of a Lancer alum (Steve Carey) and a talented point guard, Quinn will be solid for us for years to come,” said Cheng. “He works extremely hard, discipline with his training, and coachable. I am very happy that Quinn has chosen to stay home and represent the city but also continue to keep the Lancers Basketball program in the family.”

  • Najee Brown-Henderson
  • Position: Guard, Height: 6’2
  • Hometown: Windsor, ON
  • Previous Team: Northeastern State
  • UWindsor Program: Social Science

“Another local product returning home to represent the city. Najee is no stranger to the basketball community in the City of Windsor. Najee brings experience, defense, and scoring to our backcourt. He will be an exciting player to watch this upcoming season.”

  • Jomel Puno
  • Position: Guard, Height: 6’5
  • Hometown: Mississauga, ON
  • Previous Team: Fraser Valley University
  • UWindsor Program: Social & Family Relations

“Jomel’s shooting, paint pressure, athleticism will be relied on. There is a lot of upsides to his game. I believe he will be solid player over his years with us.”

  • Yohann Sam
  • Position: Guard/Forward, Height: 6’5
  • Hometown: Brampton, ON
  • Previous Team/High School: Northwood Temple Academy
  • UWindsor Program: Human Kinetics

“Yohann brings grit, defense, and paint pressure to our team. He elevates our perimeter defense with his size, length, and aggressive play,” said Cheng. “His ability to get to the rim and play in the open floor will be trusted. Like all our young players, he will also be a solid player during his time as a Lancer.”

  • Isaiah Scipio
  • Position: Forward/Centre, Height: 6’9
  • Hometown: Brampton, ON
  • Previous Team: York Lions
  • UWindsor Program: Law

”Isaiah adds size and length to our front court. His ability to run the floor and protect the rim are skill sets we needed to add to this recruiting class. In addition, his OUA experience will be a major asset for us.”

  • Daniel Cummings
  • Position: Guard/Forward, Height: 6’5
  • Hometown: Aurora, ON
  • Previous Team: Tennessee State University
  • UWindsor Program: Education

“More than 7 years later, Daniel and I reunite. Having coached Daniel in his teenage years both at the provincial and national level, Daniel’s skill set, physical play, and experience will be relied on. He gives us lots of flexibility to create advantages at both ends of the floor. Lancers fans will love Daniel both on the court and off.”

  • Andrew Brayall
  • Position: Forward/Centre, Height: 6’8
  • Hometown: Georgetown, ON
  • Previous Team/High School: Georgetown District High School
  • UWindsor Program: Human Kinetics

“Andrew is another boost to our front court with his size. His work ethic, discipline to his improvement, and coachability will help him develop over his years as a Lancer. He is young with upside. He is a critical piece to the future of this program.”

The Lancers take on the Northern Illinois Huskies in the NCAA/OUA Tip-off Classic this Tuesday, August 2nd at 7:00pm in the Dennis Fairall Fieldhouse. They open their OUA conference schedule at home against the Western Mustangs on Tuesday, November 1st in the Toldo Lancer Centre
