Windsor Spitfires vs NB Battalion October 5 2023 Game Recap
The Windsor Spitfires were under the pressure of avoiding a 0-3-0-0 record, a situation they hadn’t been in since the 1997-98 season.
The Spitfires’ aggressive gameplay was evident from the very first period. They drew first blood with a smashing goal by Maillet, his first of the season. The goal was a result of a well-coordinated play that saw Greentree and Castle assisting Maillet in front of the net.
The Battalion, however, wasn’t ready to give up that easy. They equalized the score in the next two minutes and later took the lead, making it a 2-1 game. The Spitfires faced three penalties but managed to kill them all, showcasing their defensive strength. They even had a powerplay opportunity towards the period’s end, but it was short-lived due to a minor penalty on the Spitfires.
The Battalion started the second period with a bang, extending their lead to 3-1. However, the Spitfires were not to be demoralized. They made a stunning comeback with two quick goals, turning the match into a nail-biter. Peer scored his first goal of the season, and Colton Smith’s shot found the net, much to the delight of the home crowd.
The third period was a see-saw battle with both teams trading chances. Spitfires’ Dionicio emerged as the star player, seizing a crucial goal to push the Spitfires ahead. Yet again, the Battalion made a swift comeback, tying the game at 4-4 with less than three minutes remaining.
Overtime saw Abraham of the Spitfires being tripped up in the Battalion zone, but no penalty was called. The Battalion countered with a 3-on-2 advantage but couldn’t convert. Meanwhile, Abraham managed to score a breakaway goal, thanks to an assist from Greentree. This thrilling goal not only marked Spitfires’ first win of the season but also marked Abraham’s first goal since February 9, 2023.
