The game was a tale of two halves, with each team dominating in different periods. The Spitfires started strong, taking control of the first period. However, the Greyhounds’ quickness and skill came to the fore in the second period, changing the tide of the game.
The Spitfires dominated the first period, taking 10 of the game’s first 11 shots. Despite their early dominance, it was Sault Ste. Marie who found the back of the net first. Travis Hayes, the Greyhounds’ forward, took advantage of a loose puck and scored the team’s first goal.
However, the Spitfires responded well with Liam Greentree leveling the scores with a well-taken goal. The first period ended with both teams level at 1-1.
The second period was a different story. The Greyhounds’ skill and speed were on full display, scoring three unanswered goals.
Jack Beck put Sault Ste. Marie in the lead with a well-executed counter-attack. Justin Cloutier extended their lead with a goal that was initially reviewed for a kicking motion but was eventually ruled as a good goal. Arttu Karki added to the Spitfires’ woes, scoring a power-play goal just before the buzzer to extend the Greyhounds’ lead to 4-1.
Despite being down, the Spitfires showed a lot of heart and made a spirited comeback in the third period. Arttu Karki scored his second power-play goal, seemingly securing the game for the Greyhounds.
However, the Spitfires were not done yet. Colton Smith and Liam Greentree scored two quick goals, reducing the deficit to just two. Despite their late surge, the Spitfires could not find the equalizer, and the game ended in a 5-3 victory for the Greyhounds.
