Windsor Spitfires Navigate Stormy Home Opener
The Windsor Spitfires commenced their 2023-24 season with their home opener against the Guelph Storm on September 30, 2023.
The Spitfires started the match with a bang, scoring the first goal as the Guelph powerplay expired. Greentree, seizing an opportunity, intercepted a pass from a Guelph defenseman and proceeded to score a breakaway goal. This marked his second goal of the season, providing Windsor with an 1-0 early lead.
The Spitfires’ lead, however, was short-lived. The Storm retaliated with a goal of their own, just three minutes after Windsor’s opening strike. A deflected point shot by McKenzie resulted in his first goal of the season, leveling the score at 1-1. Both teams attempted to gain an advantage in the first period, with each having one powerplay opportunity. However, neither side could score, and the initial period ended with a tied score. The Storm led in terms of shots, outshooting the Spitfires 10-5.
The second period saw the Spitfires momentarily regaining their lead. Castle, fresh out of the penalty box, capitalized on a puck that bounced to the neutral zone. He proceeded to score a breakaway goal, helping Windsor to a 2-1 lead. The jubilation was short-lived as Guelph once again equalized the score three minutes later.
The match saw a decisive turn when Guelph scored a shorthanded goal, taking a 3-2 lead. This goal came as a result of a costly error by Costanzo, who lost possession of the puck. Guelph extended their lead with a powerplay goal, ending the second period with a two-goal, 4-2 advantage over Windsor.
In the third period, both teams had their chances, and each had a powerplay opportunity. However, none could capitalize, and the score remained unchanged. Guelph managed to maintain their lead, and the game ended with a 4-2 victory for the Storm.
While the team was unable to secure a victory, the game served as a testament to their fighting spirit and potential. Spitfires’ fans can look forward to an exciting season, as the team strives to overcome the initial setbacks and climb to the top of the Ontario Hockey League.
