RED WINGS DRAFT DENNIS CHOLOWSKI IN FIRST ROUND OF 2016 NHL ENTRY DRAFT
Detroit Traded 16th Overall Pick and Datsyuk to Arizona for 20th overall, 53rd overall and Vitale
The Detroit Red Wings selected defenseman Dennis Cholowski in the first round (20th overall) of the 2016 NHL Entry Draft at the First Niagara Center in Buffalo, N.Y. Prior to the selection, the Red Wings traded their first-round pick (16th overall) and center Pavel Datsyuk to the Arizona Coyotes for the 20th overall selection, a second-round draft pick (53rd overall) and center Joe Vitale.
Cholowski is a 6-foot-1, 176-lb., defenseman who spent the 2015-16 campaign with the Chilliwack Chiefs of the British Columbia Hockey League. He led the team’s blueliners and finished fifth among BCHL defensemen with 40 points (12-28-40) and finished first in postseason scoring by a defenseman with 15 points (4-11-15) in 20 games. A 2016 BCHL Second-Team All-Star, Cholowski has tallied 67 points (16-51-67) and 20 penalty minutes in 106 games with Chilliwack over the past three seasons, adding 22 points (4-18-22) in 32 career BCHL playoff games. The Langley, British Columbia, native also won a gold medal for Canada this season at the World Junior A Challenge, picking up two assists in four games.
Prior to his time in the BCHL, Cholowski spent the 2013-14 season at the Yale Hockey Academy and helped the team to a CSSHL championship with 16 points (1-15-16) in 17 games. The 18-year-old defenseman is committed to the St. Cloud State University Huskies in the National Collegiate Hockey Conference.
