The Detroit Red Wings have agreed to terms on a one-year contract with free agent forward Steve Ott.
Steve Ott, 33, has logged 795 games, 106 goals, 175 assists and 1,475 penalty minutes in a 13-year NHL career that has included stops with the Dallas Stars, Buffalo Sabres and St. Louis Blues. Most recently, Ott skated in 122 games with the Blues and posted 17 points (3-14-17) and 157 penalty minutes in the last two-plus seasons with the club after being traded from the Sabres prior to the 2014 NHL trade deadline.
Last season, Ott was hampered with a hamstring injury and logged only 21 games with St. Louis, but returned to the lineup during the playoffs for nine games, tallying one assist and eight penalty minutes. The Summerside, Prince Edward Island, native served as the captain of the Sabres during the 2013-14 season before joining the Blues. Ott played in 107 games with Buffalo and recorded 44 points (18-26-48) and 148 penalty minutes in a season and a half with the Sabres (2012-14).
Ott was drafted in the first round (25th overall) by Dallas in the 2000 NHL Entry Draft and went on to play nine seasons for the Stars organization. The 6-foot, 189-pound forward totaled 85 goals, 135 assists and 1,170 penalty minutes in 566 games with the Stars, including a four-year stretch (2008-12) where he recorded at least 32 points and 135 penalty minutes, highlighted by the 2008-09 campaign in which he posted 46 points (19-27-46). Internationally, Ott represented Canada at the 2010 IIHF World Championship and won a bronze medal with Canada at the 2001 World Junior Championship.
