The 2019 IIHF World Junior Championship ended in the quarter-finals for Canada’s National Junior Team following a heartbreaking 2-1 overtime loss to Finland in front of 17,047 fans at Rogers Arena on Wednesday night. The loss ends Canada’s bid for back-to-back gold medals for the first time since it won five straight from 2005 to 2009.

“I told the guys we played a great game, we came together, competed and became a family. They played the way we wanted to. It’s a game of inches and it’s a hard tournament to win. We just have everyone reflect on their own experience, what they felt they could have done better and what they felt they did well – that’s how you get better.” – Tim Hunter, head coach

  • Ian Mitchell (Calahoo, Alta./University of Denver, NCHC) scored Canada’s lone goal.
  • Michael DiPietro (Amherstburg, Ont./Ottawa, OHL) held off Finland until the final minute, finishing the game with 32 saves.
  • Finland outshot Canada 34-25.
