LOCAL CYCLIST RIDES 24 HOURS FOR ALZHEIMER’S

For several years, Don Martel, Windsor resident and professional photographer, has made it his personal mission to fundraise for those suffering with dementias.

In 2015, Don cycled from the east coast to the west coast and then in 2018, he cycled from the north of Canada to the south. His life changing adventures have raised over $30,000.00 for Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias. Don’s journey and his desire to raise funds for the Alzheimer Society of Windsor & Essex County continue!

For the second year in a row, on Wednesday, May 20, 2021 Don will cycle sunset to sunset on his well-travelled bike, Miracle. He will begin this journey, at age 62, at the big Canadian flag at the base of Ouellette Avenue. Don will cycle for 24 hours non-stop through Essex County and finish his mission at age 63.

The funds raised will help the Alzheimer Society navigate our unprecedented times and allow us to maintain, sustain and grow our essential programs and services. “I have seen firsthand how this disease can affect individuals and their families. I also know how important local services are to those living with dementia” shares Don Martel. “ I am truly blessed that I can continue to fundraise in this manner, during a time that it is so challenging to raise much needed funds through events.”

Long before “social distancing” was a part of our daily vocabulary, those facing dementia knew exactly what it meant.

So many people living with dementia have felt isolated from friends, families and communities. The Alzheimer Society of Windsor & Essex County has been a lifeline for people living with dementia to get support, connect and learn – something that is essential to living the best life possible.

Today, the need for dementia support is greater than ever before. The demand for our support services is at an all-time high and we anticipate the demand will only increase at faster rates.

On Don’s birthday, he hopes to raise funds to support new, innovative virtual services, created to reach clients during the Covid-19 pandemic, while developing new, safe program guides to help those living with dementia get through this new normal.

The trip starts at 8:30pm, Wednesday, May 20, 2021 and goes to 8:30pm,Thursday, May 21, 2021. The start and end location is Dieppe Gardens (under the Great Canadian Flag).
