2016 IIHF World Junior Championship

Helsinki, Finland

Canada clinches a playoff spot in the 2016 IIHF World Junior Championship, thanks to a shootout win over Switzerland on Tuesday. Dylan Strome and Joe Hicketts scored in regulation, while Brayden Point and Mathew Barzal both beat Swiss netminder Joren van Pottelberghe in the shootout two record two more points in the standings.

Canada faces Sweden in its final preliminary round game of the 2016 IIHF World Junior Championship on Thursday, Dec. 31 at 1 p.m. ET.

“Tonight, I think, it was a good win by the guys. We pushed back for that win as a team, so that’s good. Joe (Hicketts) played a strong game tonight. He was by far our best player. We pushed hard for that comeback, and I know we played good as a team.”- Jake Virtanen

“After the first two mishaps, kind of bad bounces, went in there, I just turned it off and tried to battle and I think the rest of the game went pretty well for me. [The shoutout] was when I started feeling good; more minutes, more ice time. I just really found my game back.

“Any team can come out and surprise anybody. [The Swiss Team] kind of caught us on our heels a bit, and they came to play, so kudos to them.” – Mackenzie Blackwood

“We didn’t come out with the same intensity as we did against the Americans or against the Danes, for that matter. That’s lack of preparation on our part, and we won’t make that mistake again.

“Joe Hicketts, he’s a stud. He’s not the biggest guy out there, but he makes up for it with his intensity. He’s a great guy to have on your team.” -Mathew Barzal
