Canada, USA Advance to 2018 IIHF World Junior Championship Semi Finals in Buffalo, N.Y.

Team Canada booked its ticket to the semifinals at the 2018 IIHF World Junior Championship with a 8-2 quarter-final win over Switzerland on Tuesday.

Canada scored three times in the first and second periods on the way to the win, as 12 players registered at least a point in the game.

  • Drake Batherson (New Minas, N.S./Cape Breton, QMJHL) scored twice for Canada, while Brett Howden (Oakbank, Man./Moose Jaw, WHL) added four points with a goal and three assists.
  • Maxime Comtois (Longueuil, Que./Victoriaville, QMJHL) added a goal and two assists, Jordan Kyrou (Toronto/Sarnia, OHL), Cale Makar (Calgary/University of Massachusetts, HE) and Conor Timmins (Thorold, Ont./Sault Ste. Marie, OHL) had a goal and an assist each. Captain Dillon Dubé (Cochrane, Alta./Kelowna, WHL) rounded out the scoring for the red-and-white.
  • Carter Hart (Sherwood Park, Alta./Everett, WHL) picked up his third tournament win after registering 13 saves.
  • Canada outshot Switzerland 60-15 in the game.

U.S. Beats Russia, 4-2, to Advance

Kieffer Bellows (Edina, Minn./Portland Winterhawks) scored twice and Joseph Woll (St. Louis, Mo./Boston College) made 27 saves to lead the U.S. National Junior Team past Russia, 4-2, tonight in its quarterfinal game of the 2018 International Ice Hockey Federation World Junior Championship here at KeyBank Center.

“What a terrific effort by our guys against a quality opponent,” said Bob Motzko, head coach of the 2018 U.S. National Junior Team. “We saw success in all facets of the game, from our special teams to our goaltending. We’ll enjoy this tonight and tomorrow turn our attention to Sweden.” 

Team USA (3-1-0-1/W-OTW-OTL-L) will face Sweden in the semifinals on Thursday (Jan. 4). The game is set for 4:00 p.m. ET at KeyBank Center.
