Darius Slay is the NFC Defensive Player of the Week

Cornerback Darius Slay forced a pair of turnovers in the Lions’ Week 5 win.

Slay was named NFC Defensive Player of the Week after forcing two turnovers in the Detroit Lions’ Week 5 win vs. Philadelphia. Slay had three tackles (all solo), one interception, one forced fumble and two pass defenses against the Eagles.

On the forced fumble, the Lions had just taken the team’s final timeout of the game prior to the play. If the Eagles converted on the 3rd-and-2, Philadelphia would have run out the clock and won the game. The interception occurred on the first play of the Eagles’ drive right after the Lions made a 29-yard field goal to take the lead. It was also the first interception thrown by the Eagles and QB Carson Wentz this season.

Slay is the first player to force a fumble resulting in a takeaway and intercept a pass in the last 3:00 of the fourth quarter since Indianapolis Colts CB Eugene Daniel at the New York Jets December 5, 1993.

He is the first Lions player with a forced fumble and interception in a game since CB Eric Wright against the Kansas City Chiefs September 18, 2011.
