LIONS HEAD COACH JIM CALDWELL TALKED TO THE MEDIA ON HIS CONTRACT, HERE’S WHAT HE HAD TO SAY…
On if he has a sense of what he needs to do to get a contract extension: “It hasn’t crossed my mind. I don’t worry about it. I don’t think about it one second. My primary focus is two things, my men and my mission. That’s it. That’s it. End of story.”
On if he gets worried about not getting a contract extension: “No, no I don’t. I’m not like you. You and I are different people. I’ve never been that way. Never concerned, never worried, have great faith. Never even crossed my mind. Don’t even think twice about it until you or you ask a question. That’s about it. You two guys are completely obsessed with it for some odd reason. But I’m going to answer it the exact same way I’ve been doing it for 40 years now that I’ve been coaching.”
On if he is surprised that he hasn’t been given a contract extension: “I don’t worry about those kinds of things. I don’t think twice about them. They don’t concern me. I have one mission, to take care of my men, and to win football games, and that is it. I mean, and that’s the truth. So, it may be great to ask those questions, which is fine. I’m going to answer them the exact same way if you ask them now or six weeks from now. It’s going to be exactly the same way. It doesn’t concern me. My concern, like I said, is winning football games.”
On if he plans to coach in 2018: “I think the other day I answered that question because someone asked me about retirement. I said, ‘Doesn’t even cross my mind. I’m still a young man. What are you talking about?”
On if he thinks his mindset about retirement is why he’s lasted 40 years in the coaching business: “No, a lot of people have a different approach than I do, and they still have been able to coach a long time. So, I think you better be good at what you do. You better find a way to win or you’ll be looking for another job. That’s our business. That’s the fun part of it if you ask me. That’s the challenge. Unlike a lot of other businesses that you don’t have to deal with such high standards, we have to deal with high standards in everything that we do. That’s what drives our men. I think that’s what drives the guys that are in this business as well.”
On if he worries about his players becoming distracted with his contract extension situation: “I think you’ve probably noticed pretty well that my men sort of believe and look at things the same way I do. So, as long as they stay vein, we don’t have anything to worry about. It is not a distraction.”
