Windsor/Essex County Sports Hall of Fame Class of 2016
Six athletes and three builders will join the elite Windsor/Essex County Sports Hall of Fame!
The Windsor/Essex County Sports Hall of Fame welcomes the entire Class of 2016 at the 36th Annual Induction Ceremony & Sports Gala tonight at the Giovanni Caboto Club.
The honoured class of 2016 inductees include:
Brett Romberg, Athlete-Football
Brett Romberg is one of the finest football players Windsor and Essex County has ever produced, and certainly one whose career included some of the highest accolades achievable in NCAA college football.
Linda McCurdy, Athlete-Track & Field
Linda McCurdy is one of the greatest high jumpers in Windsor / Essex County track and field history. In addition to an All-American career at the University of Texas El Paso, she successfully represent Canada on the international stage around the world.
Albert Mady, Athlete-Martial Arts
Albert Mady was first introduced to the martial arts at the age of 10. Having shaped and guided the course of his life, Albert has received some of the highest accolades his sport has to offer as both a competitor and instructor, becoming the first Canadian to achieve a 9th degree black belt in Ku Dan Isshin-Ryu karate in 2006.
Tom Nelson, Athlete-Baseball
Tom Nelson was one of the finest all-around baseball players to come out of the Windsor-Essex region, a two-time Olympian, with as many national championships to his credit as any athlete from the area.
Krista Shearer-Kersey, Athlete-Martial Arts
Krista Shearer-Kersey is one of Windsor / Essex County’s most decorated martial arts athletes who graced the Olympic stage at the age of 15 and went on to win multiple world titles in Taekwondo.
Ed Jovanovski, Athlete-Hocke
Ed Jovanovski was the first Windsor and Essex County hockey player to be selected first overall in a National Hockey League entry draft, which launched a career that saw him play more than 1,000 games in the National Hockey League as one of the finest two-way defensemen of his era.
Lamon Kersey, Builder-Martial Arts
Lamon Kersey has forged a hallmark career in the martial arts community, both as a competitor and particularly as a trainer, mentor, and teacher to thousands in the Windsor / Essex County region and beyond.
Bob Marchand, Builder-Baseball
Bob Marchand, a pillar of Windsor and Essex County baseball for more than 30 years, has been one of the guiding hands of the Windsor Selects program since its inception, and has seen more than 100 of his diamond protégés move on to the U.S. College and/or professional ranks.
John McKibbon, Builder-Triathlon
Having been the regions foremost pioneer and promotor of triathlon for more than 35 years, John McKibbon has introduced and trained countless adults and children through local triathlon events and programs, while officiating world-class competitions across the globe.
SPECIAL ACHIEVEMENT
The Essex-Kent Junior Golf Tournament
In 1926, businessman Harry Neal, of the Neal Baking Company, approached golf architect legend Donald Ross to design a new course on the Roseland park property. Held at the recently completed Roseland Park Country Club, it was Neal, along with Clarence Smith and others, that established the Essex-Kent Boys’ Golf Tournament in 1928.

Windsor Central – 1966 Canadian Little League Champions
In 1966 an all-star baseball team was assembled to compete in the district championships. Under the management of the late Cam Knowler and coach Gary Trudell, the Windsor Central club, comprised of 11-12 year olds, won the districts and in doing so qualified for the Ontario play-downs.
Windsor South Canadians – 1972 Canadian Little League Champions
In 1972 the Windsor South Canadians, comprised of 11-12 year old boys, became the 2nd and last Windsor team to win the Canadian Little League Championship.
The Class of 2016 will be officially inducted on Friday, October 21, 2016 at the Giovanni Caboto Club.
