Flint Firebirds Edge Spitfires in OT
Jalen Smereck scored the overtime winner and Connor Hicks made 22 saves as the Flint Firebirds defeated the Windsor Spitfires 4-3 at the Dort Event Center in Flint Saturday afternoon.
Former Spitfires Luke Kirwan and Ryan Moore, along with Kole Sherwood, had the other goals for Flint (11-8-0-1). Kirwan’s 13th goal of the season came just 18 seconds into the first period to open the scoring in the game.
Julius Nattinen paced the Spitfires (13-4-1-0) offensively with a goal and an assists while Logan Stanley, with his first of the season, and Gabe Vilardi had the other goals for Windsor.
Left-winger Graham Knott, acquired from the Niagara IceDogs on Friday, played on a line with Nattinen and Vilardi and picked up his first point as a Spitfire by assisting on Vilardi’s third period marker..
Michael DiPietro made 22 saves for the Spitfires, who saw their four-game winning streak snapped while also dropping their second of three decisions to the Firebirds this season. Both losses have come in Flint.
The Spitfires return to action Sunday afternoon when they host the Peterborough Petes at the WFCU Centre.
