IIHF Women’s World Championship

Kamloops, B.C., March 28-April 4, 2016

Canada’s National Women’s Team picked up its first win at 2016 IIHF Women’s World Championship with a 8-1 victory over Russia on Tuesday night at the Sandman Centre.

Meaghan Mikkelson (St. Albert, Alta./Calgary, CWHL) and Halli Krzyzaniak (Neepawa, Man./University of North Dakota, WCHA) both found the back of the net twice, while Rebecca Johnston (Sudbury, Ont./Calgary, CWHL) and Brianne Jenner (Oakville, Ont./Calgary, CWHL) each picked up four points on the night. Charline Labonté (Boisbriand, Que./Montreal, CWHL) earned her first victory in net, turning away 13 of 14 shots.

Canada’s next game is March 31 (10:30 p.m. ET) – Canada vs. Finland.

“I think it was definitely nice to get the monkey off my back the other day and after that I think I just have a little bit more confidence shooting and we’ve had a lot of great screens in front and a lot of people creating traffic for me so it’s worked out really well.” – Halli Krzyzaniak on scoring two goals against Russia

“I think after the first period they were playing a bit of a trap so we just kind of talked in the dressing room and as a defensive corps and said that we needed to skate the puck a little bit more. Obviously, putting a couple in the net is always a plus so I think that we just always try to do our job first and the offence is a bonus.” – Meaghan Mikkelson on Canada being down after the first period and her success on the ice in the second

“I think the momentum was going, the energy in the crowd was coming with us, and it was just amazing. I think the girls did well and we had a couple of power-play goals. Unfortunately we had a couple of penalties but other than that I think we stuck to the plan and it was great.” – Marie-Philip Poulin on the Kamloops atmosphere and Canada’s play

The U.S. Women’s National Team defeated Finland, 2-1.  Hilary Knight (Sun Valley, Idaho) tallied her third goal of the tournament and Jocelyne Lamoureux-Davidson (Grand Forks, N.D.) added the game-winning goal to lead the U.S. Women’s National Team to a 2-1 comeback win against Finland in its second game of the 2016 International Ice Hockey Federation Women’s World Championship.
