Switzerland 4, Denmark 0 – Rogers Arena, Vancouver

  • Switzerland earned its first win of the tournament, blanking Denmark on the strength of a hat trick from Philipp Kurashev and one goal from Simon Le Coultre.
  • Luca Hollenstein made 21 saves for the shutout.

Finland 5, Slovakia 1 – Save-On-Foods Memorial Centre, Victoria

  • Finland took the win over Slovakia, with goals from Henri Jokiharju, Santeri Virtanen, Ville Heinola, Anton Lundell and Oskari Laaksonen.
  • Milos Roman scored the lone goal for Slovakia.

Sweden 5, United States 4 (OT) – Save-On-Foods Memorial Centre, Victoria

  • Adam Boqvist scored the overtime winner to give Sweden its 47th-consecutive preliminary-round win.
  • Filip Westerlund, Rickard Hugg, Emil Bemström and Erik Brännström had the other goals for Sweden.
  • Ryan Poehling scored a natural hat trick for the United States, which erased a four-goal deficit in the last 10:26, including two goals in the final minute.

Canada 5, Czech Republic 1 – Rogers Arena, Vancouver

Canada’s National Junior Team is a perfect 3-0 at the 2019 IIHF World Junior Championship following its 5-1 win over the Czech Republic in front of 17,012 fans at Rogers Arena on Saturday night.

  • Maxime Comtois (Longueuil, Que./Drummondville, QMJHL) scored his team-leading fifth goal of the tournament, while MacKenzie Entwistle (Georgetown, Ont./Owen Sound, OHL), Morgan Frost (Aurora, Ont./Sault Ste. Marie, OHL), Alexis Lafrenière (Saint-Eustache, Que./Rimouski, QMJHL) added one goal apiece.
  • Ty Smith (Lloydminster, Alta./Spokane, WHL) and Jack Studnicka (Tecumseh, Ont./Oshawa, OHL) chipped in a pair of assists each.
  • Michael DiPietro (Amherstburg, Ont./Ottawa, OHL) stopped 23 of 24 shots he faced for his second win in as many starts.
  • Canada outshot the Czech Republic 30-24.

“I think we did a good job killing their speed. They’re a group that likes to hop in the rush, all five guys go and we had support taking away seams and offensive scoring again tonight. I think it all started from a solid d-zone, so all in all it was a great game and definitely better than the last two and we just have to keep building from here.” –  Michael  DiPietro
