LIONS HEAD COACH JIM CALDWELL

On facing Bears RB Joique Bell: “Joique’s one of my all-time favorite people. He’s just a tough, hard-nosed guy, was a great tone-setter for us. Got one of those unique personalities, and a heck of a football player, so it’ll be a little different playing against him.”

On if he’ll give Bell a handshake in Week 4 at Chicago: “Not that same one.”

On the up-and-down roller coaster the NFL can be from an emotional standpoint: “What we try and do is not to have that kind of, up-and-down mood swing. You don’t want losses to linger on too long, and you certainly don’t want wins to linger on too long as well. You want to make sure that your guys are fairly steady, that they understand this is a marathon and not a sprint. We try to stay away from that, and we try to focus on this game, and this game only. We don’t look back, we look ahead, and what’s in our sights is a real challenging game against a very good football team.”

On the performance of CB Darius Slay through Week 3: “I think just like a lot of our guys, Darius is playing steady. It’s not like he has five interceptions or anything of that nature, but he’s doing his job. He’s attentive, he works at it and I think one of the things about him is he’s still young. He’s still getting better, so he’s doing fine.”

On the team not having a big kick return play yet: “Yet. I think that’s important, because oftentimes I think that people will look at three games in the season, and think that the season’s over with. But, there’s still a lot of time, there’s a lot of time to improve and I think you’ll see us continue to improve in that area. We try not to look and talk about what we miss, we talk about what we have. Do we have individuals that are capable of giving us big plays? You better believe it. They’ve got to show up. Do we have individuals that are capable of giving us long runs on our return game? You better believe it, we do, plus our punt return and our kickoff return. But, it has to show up, but it’s not just them. It’s the guys that are blocking for them that give them the alleys to run and things of that nature. We have that capability, we haven’t gotten it yet, but I think you’ll see it forthcoming.”

On the value that a healthy LB Antwione Williams provides to the linebacking corps: “It kind of remains to be seen, we’ll see what happens. He’s been doing a little bit, obviously you can see from the report he’s done a little bit, but we’ll see where that goes. Not quite certain of that.”

On this week’s captains: “(Darius) Slay, Golden (Tate) and (Brandon) Copeland.”
