Toronto Maple Leafs vs St. Louis Blues February 13 2024 Game Recap
In an electrifying showdown on February 13, 2024, the Toronto Maple Leafs overpowered the St. Louis Blues by a score of 4-1. The game was marked by the outstanding performance of Bobby McMann, who registered his first-ever NHL hat trick.
The game kicked off with the Leafs taking the upper hand. Bobby McMann showed his mettle by scoring his third goal of the season at the 5:33 mark of the first period. He managed to outmaneuver Brayden Schenn of the Blues along the boards to net the first goal of the match.
The Leafs didn’t stop there. They further extended their lead when William Nylander’s pass deflected off the stick of Matthew Kessel, a rookie defenseman from the Blues, and found its way past a defenseless Jordan Binnington. This goal, Nylander’s 26th of the season, came at 16:25, leaving the Blues trailing by two goals at the end of the first period.
The Blues made a comeback early in the second period. At 5:36, Alexey Toropchenko tipped in his ninth goal of the season, reducing the deficit to 2-1. Matthew Kessel assisted this goal, marking his first NHL point in his 19th game.
However, the Leafs were able to hold onto their lead, and the second period ended with the score at 2-1 in favor of the Leafs.
The third period was all about Bobby McMann’s dominance. Barely eight minutes into the period, McMann scored his second goal of the night, collecting a loose puck and roofing a shot upstairs. This goal, McMann’s fourth overall, doubled his career total.
McMann wasn’t done yet. He completed his hat trick with 1:39 remaining in regulation, sending his clearing attempt off the defensive zone boards into the Blues’ empty net, which was at the other end.
In spite of the Blues’ recent 7-1-0 record over their last eight games, they were unable to weather the storm put on by the Leafs. The Blues’ captain, Brayden Schenn, acknowledged that the team needed to be much better, stating, “we just weren’t skating enough and supporting each other enough.”
Conversely, the Leafs’ coach Sheldon Keefe was pleased with the performance, particularly considering the absence of key players like Mitch Marner and John Tavares due to illness. He commended the team, saying, “we needed guys to step up in different ways. We had a lot of great efforts.”
