2017 Memorial Cup Game 5 – Sea Dogs Bounce Thunderbirds from 2017 Memorial Cup

Joe Velano scored twice and Callum Booth made 31 saves as the Saint John Sea Dogs blanked the Seattle Thunderbirds 7-0 in the 2017 Memorial Cup Game 5 at the WFCU Centre in Windsor.

After a scoreless first period, the Sea Dogs (1-2) exploded for six goals on Velano’s first of the contest and single markers by Chase Stewart, Mathieu Joseph, Spencer Smallman, Cole Reginato and Bokondji Imama to grab control of the contest. Velano’s second goal just over six minutes into the third period rounded out the scoring in the game,

Seattle starting goaltender Carl Stankowski made 10 saves for the Thunderbirds (0-3) before being pulled with five minutes left in the second frame. Rylan Toth made 11 saves in a relief effort.

The game was a quick turnaround in fortunes for the Sea Dogs who were hammered 12-5 by the Erie Otters on Monday night while the Thunderbirds’ misfortunes continued as they were outscored 14-1 in their last two games of the round robin portion of the tournament.

The Sea Dogs now advance to Friday’s semi-final against the loser of Wednesday night’s game between the host team Windsor Spitfires (2-0) and the Ontario Hockey League champion Erie Otters (2-0). The winner of that game advances directly to Sunday’s championship game of the 2017 Memorial Cup. As a result of their loss Tuesday night, the Thunderbirds have been eliminated from the tournament.
