2016-17 NHL Award Winners
Senators’ Anderson Awarded Bill Masterton Trophy
Ottawa Senators goaltender Craig Anderson is the 2016-17 recipient of the Bill Masterton Memorial Trophy, awarded annually to the NHL player who “best exemplifies the qualities of perseverance, sportsmanship, and dedication to hockey.” The award was presented by the Professional Hockey Writers Association (PHWA) to honor the late Bill Masterton, a player for the Minnesota North Stars who exhibited those qualities. Masterton died on Jan. 15, 1968, as a result of an on-ice injury.
Maple Leafs’ Matthews Wins Calder Trophy
Toronto Maple Leafs center Auston Matthews has won the Calder Memorial Trophy, awarded “to the player selected as the most proficient in his first year of competition in the National Hockey League,” as selected by the Professional Hockey Writers Association. Matthews was a near-unanimous selection, receiving 164 of 167 first-place votes and three second-place tallies for 1,661 points. Second-place Patrik Laine of the Winnipeg Jets, who also was named on all 167 ballots, collected 1,106 voting points. Third-place Zach Werenski of the Columbus Blue Jackets garnered 711 voting points.
Bruins’ Bergeron Wins Frank Selke Trophy
Boston Bruins center Patrice Bergeron has won the Frank J. Selke Trophyfor a recordtying fourth time in recognition of “the forward who best excels in the defensive aspects of the game,” as selected by the Professional Hockey Writers Association. Bergeron garnered 1,147 voting points, including 71 first-place votes, to edge second-place Ryan Kesler of the Anaheim Ducks (945 voting points), the 2011 Selke recipient. Mikko Koivu of the Minnesota Wild finished third with 752 points in his first year as a finalist.
Oilers’ McDavid Wins Hart Trophy as NHL MVP
Center Connor McDavid of the Edmonton Oilers has won the Hart Memorial Trophy, awarded “to the player adjudged to be the most valuable to his team,” as selected by the Professional Hockey Writers Association. McDavid was the only player named on each of the 167 ballots cast and received 147 first-place votes for 1,604 voting points. Pittsburgh Penguins center Sidney Crosby, named on 166 ballots including 14 first-place tallies, collected 1,104 points and finished second in voting for the second consecutive year. Columbus Blue Jackets goaltender Sergei Bobrovsky ranked third (469).
Blue Jackets’ Tortorella Wins Jack Adams Award
Columbus Blue Jackets head coach John Tortorella has captured the Jack Adams Award as “the NHL coach adjudged to have contributed the most to his team’s success,” as selected by the NHL Broadcasters’ Association. Tortorella was named on 73 of 105 ballots cast and received 39 first-place votes in accumulating 267 voting points. Mike Babcock of the Toronto Maple Leafs (182 voting points) narrowly edged Todd McLellan of the Edmonton Oilers (181) for second place.
Sharks’ Burns Wins Norris Trophy
Brent Burns of the San Jose Sharks has won the James Norris Memorial Trophy, awarded to the defenseman demonstrating “the greatest all-around ability in the position,” as selected by the Professional Hockey Writers Association. Burns was the only player receiving votes on all 167 ballots and attracted 96 first-place votes for 1,437 voting points, enough to edge two-time Norris Trophy recipient Erik Karlsson of the Ottawa Senators (1,292 points), who finished second in the voting for the second consecutive year. Victor Hedman of the Tampa Bay Lightning was third (728) in his first year as a finalist.
Flames’ Gaudreau Wins Lady Byng Trophy
Calgary Flames left wing Johnny Gaudreau has captured the Lady Byng Memorial Trophy, awarded “to the player adjudged to have exhibited the best type of sportsmanship and gentlemanly
conduct combined with a high standard of playing ability,” as selected by the Professional Hockey Writers Association. Gaudreau was named on 130 of the 167 ballots and received 54 first-place votes for 906 voting points to finish ahead of Vladimir Tarasenko of the St. Louis Blues (738) and Mikael Granlund of the Minnesota Wild (445).
Predators’ Poile Voted General Manager of the Year
David Poile of the Nashville Predators is the 2016-17 winner of the NHL General Manager of the Year Award. Voting for this award was conducted among NHL Club General Managers and a panel of NHL executives, print and broadcast media at the conclusion of the Second Round of the Stanley Cup Playoffs.
Blue Jackets’ Bobrovsky Wins Vezina Trophy
Sergei Bobrovskyof the Columbus Blue Jackets has captured his second career Vezina Trophy, awarded to the “goalkeeper adjudged to be the best at his position,” as selected by NHL General Managers. Prior to 1981-82, the Vezina was awarded to the goaltender(s) whose team allowed the fewest goals during the regular season, the current criterion for the William Jennings Trophy.
Bobrovsky was a runaway winner, garnering 25 first-place votes from the 30 cast by NHL General Managers. His 138 voting points placed him ahead of the 2015-16 Vezina recipient, Washington’s Braden Holtby (87), and the 2014-15 winner, Montreal’s Carey Price (19).
Oilers’ Connor McDavid Selected as 2016-17 Ted Lindsay Award Recipient
The National Hockey League Players’ Association (NHLPA) announced today that Connor McDavid of the Edmonton Oilers is the recipient of the 2016-17 Ted Lindsay Award after garnering the most votes from his fellow players for his exceptional season. The Ted Lindsay Award is presented annually “to the most outstanding player in the NHL,” as voted by fellow members of the NHLPA.
