NHL NEWS NOVEMBER 2, ANAHEIM DUCKS WIN IN OT

Erik Karlsson (3-1–4) tied the game with 2:12 remaining in regulation to complete his first career NHL hat trick and help the Sharks earn a point Tuesday in a 6-5 OT loss to the Ducks.

  • Karlsson became the first defenseman League-wide to score a hat trick since Arizona’s Jakob Chychrun on April 4, 2021 (also against Anaheim). Karlsson was the first NHL blueliner age 32 or older with a three-goal game since 2010-11, when four defensemen achieved the feat (Zdeno Chara, Ed Jovanovski, Nicklas Lidstrom & Lubomir Visnovsky).
  • Karlsson (9-6–15 in 12 GP) reached nine goals and 15 points on the season to move past Sabres defenseman Rasmus Dahlin (6-6–12 in 9 GP) for the outright lead in both categories among blueliners. Karlsson has led all defensemen in scoring at the conclusion of a regular season four times in his NHL career (2015-16, 2014-15, 2013-14 & 2011-12).

Other players continue noteworthy starts to THE season

  • Oilers teammates Leon Draisaitl (1-4–5), Connor McDavid (2-2–4) and Evander Kane (3-0–3) combined for six goals and 12 points as Edmonton erupted for a season-high seven tallies to extend its winning streak to five games. Draisaitl (5-16–21 in 10 GP) recorded the fifth five-point game of his NHL career and ranks second in League scoring this season behind McDavid (11-11–22 in 10 GP). McDavid also became the first NHL player to reach the 10-goal mark in 2022-23.
  • Devils forward Jesper Bratt (4-12–16 in 10 GP) had an assist to extend his season-opening point streak to double digits and help New Jersey improve to 4-0-0 in its last four contests. Bratt matched the Devils/Rockies/Scouts franchise record for longest season-opening point streak, a mark set by Tim Higgins (10 GP in 1984-85).
  • Rangers goaltender Igor Shesterkin stopped all 19 shots he faced to record the ninth shutout of his NHL career and improve to 6-0-2 in eight appearances in 2022-23 (2.22 GAA, .921 SV%, 1 SO). He became the second netminder in franchise history to record at least one point in eight consecutive appearances from the start of a season, joining Gilles Villemure (9 GP in 1971-72).
  • Kraken forward Matty Beniers scored the last of Seattle’s three unanswered goals at Scotiabank Saddledome as the visitors earned a win after overcoming a multi-goal, third-period deficit for the second time in franchise history (also March 19). Beniers (5-4–9 in 11 GP) has found the score sheet in five consecutive contests and leads all rookies with nine points this season.
  • Lightning forward Nikita Kucherov (1-2–3) scored the go-ahead goal with 2:30 left in the third period as Tampa Bay overcame three separate deficits to defeat Ottawa. Kucherov, who extended his point streak to eight games, also had the winner with 56.2 seconds remaining in regulation during the Lightning’s 4-3 victory against the Sharks on Oct. 29.

Lindholm caps four-point night with oT winner in Winter Classic preview

Hampus Lindholm (1-3–4) factored on each of the Bruins’ four unanswered goals – including scoring the winner at 3:37 of overtime – as Boston left PPG Paints Arena with a victory in its final head-to-head game with Pittsburgh before the 2023 Winter Classic. The Bruins (9-0-1, 18 points), who earned nine wins through 10 games in a season for the first time in franchise history, joined the Islanders (Oct. 29) and Oilers (Oct. 12) as the third team with a three-goal comeback win in 2022-23.

  • Lindholm (3-8–11 in 10 GP) became the first NHL defenseman to record a four-point game this season (Erik Karlsson also achieved the feat Tuesday) and the fourth Bruins blueliner in the past 30 years to do so, joining Ray Bourque (7x; last: Oct. 28, 1999), Torey Krug (Feb. 1, 2020 & March 6, 2018) and Matt Grzelcyk (Jan. 10, 2022). He also became the ninth defenseman in League history to tally at least four points in a contest_ including an overtime goal.
  • ICYMI: The Bruins and Penguins unveiled their team logos for the 2023 Winter Classic on Tuesday. The game is set to take place at Fenway Park, home of the MLB’s Boston Red Sox, on Jan. 2, 2023.

NOT ONE PATH: DYLAN COZENS

Sabres forward Dylan Cozens, who has 4-2–6 in nine games so far this season (including a goal in his last outing), is the most-recent player to be featured in our Not One Path series. Cozens grew up in Whitehorse, Yukon – a city in northern Canada with a population just shy of 30,000 – and had only one league to play in growing up: a men’s recreational hockey league. That same men’s league Cozens played in at age 12 before leaving home to pursue competitive hockey is the one his father, Mike, skated in while he was in his 60s. Despite growing up in a remote location with a small population, he made his dreams of playing in the NHL come true.

The incident occurred at 2:54 of the first period. Cizikas was assessed a major penalty and game misconduct for interference. The money goes to the Players’ Emergency Assistance Fund.
