FLYERS ERUPT FOR EIGHT GOALS IN HOME OPENER
Claude Giroux (2-2—4), Sean Couturier (2-1—3) and Scott Laughton (2-0—2) each scored twice and Jakub Voracek and Shane Gostisbehere collected three assists apiece to power the Flyers past the Capitals in their home opener. Philadelphia scored at least eight goals in its home opener for just the second time in franchise history (also Oct. 7, 1982: 9-5 W vs. QUE). It also marked the team’s highest goal output in any regular-season game since Nov. 5, 2011 vs. CBJ (9-2 W).
HITCHCOCK PASSES ARBOUR INTO THIRD ON ALL-TIME WINS LIST
Stars head coach Ken Hitchcock registered the 783rd victory of his regular-season career to surpass Al Arbour (782) for sole possession of third place on the NHL’s all-time list among head coaches. Hitchcock, who also served behind the Dallas bench from 1996-2002 and led the team to its first Stanley Cup in 1999, is the franchise’s all-time leader in wins (279).
MATTHEWS, BUTCHER PLAY HELP LEAD CLUBS TO VICTORIES
Maple Leafs forward Auston Matthews, last year’s Calder Trophy winner, and Devils defenseman Will Butcher, recipient of the 2017 Hobey Baker Award, each registered two points to continue their hot starts to the season and help their respective teams improve to 4-1-0:
- Matthews (2-0—2) scored his third career overtime goal – and second this week (also Monday vs. CHI) – to help the Maple Leafs defeat the Canadiens for the first time since Jan. 18, 2014. Matthews has registered at least one point in every game this season (5-3—8). With the victory, Mike Babcock became the 16th head coach in NHL history to record 600 career wins.
- Butcher (0-2—2) collected multiple assists for the third time in five career NHL games to help the Devils defeat the Rangers.
ON THIS DATE IN NHL HISTORY: October 15, 1989
Wayne Gretzky passes Gordie Howe to become the NHL all-time scoring leader, and he does it in front of the fans who cheered for him for nearly a decade.
Gretzky ties Howe’s record of 1,850 points when he gets an assist on Bernie Nicholls’ first-period goal, giving the Los Angeles Kings a 1-0 lead against Gretzky’s former team, the Edmonton Oilers, at Northlands Coliseum. The first 1,669 points come during Gretzky’s nine seasons with the Oilers.
The Kings rally from down 2-1 and 3-2, but the Oilers score again and take a 4-3 lead into the final minute of the third period. With time running out, Gretzky picks up a loose puck to the left of the crease and flips a backhand shot past Oilers goaltender Bill Ranford with 53 seconds remaining to tie the game and pass Howe.
“My initial reaction was, ‘Hey, we’ve tied it,'” Gretzky says. “Then it struck me, ‘Wow, that’s the record breaker.'”
Gretzky gets a three-minute standing ovation from the crowd of 17,503. The game is stopped for a 15-minute celebration that includes Howe and Gretzky’s parents.
To cap the evening, Gretzky scores again at 3:24 of overtime to give the Kings a 5-4 victory.
