GOLDEN KNIGHTS IMPROVE TO 5-1-0, MATCH 100-YEAR-OLD BENCHMARK
Vegas saw its 4-1 lead erased in the third period – including surrendering a game-tying goal with 8.9 seconds remaining in regulation – but David Perron (2-0—2) scored in overtime to power the Golden Knights to a 5-1-0 record. Vegas became the first team in the NHL’s modern era (since 1943-44) to win five of its first six games in its inaugural season.
In the 100-year history of the League, only one other franchise has posted a 5-1-0 mark in its first season. The Canadiens achieved the feat in 1917-18 with a 5-1-0 record that included a forfeit victory over the Montreal Wanderers as a result of a fire that burned Westmount Arena to the ground on Jan. 2, 1918.
KUCHEROV JOINS ELITE COMPANY WITH SEVEN-GAME GOAL STREAK
Nikita Kucherov (1-1—2) scored in a seventh consecutive game (8-4—12) to help the Lightning earn a point against the Devils. Kucherov became the sixth player in the NHL’s modern era (since 1943-44) to score a goal in at least seven consecutive team games to begin a season.
MALKIN TIES LEMIEUX FOR MOST OVERTIME GOALS IN PENGUINS HISTORY
Sidney Crosby tied the game with 55.3 seconds remaining in regulation and Evgeni Malkin (1-3—4) scored 58 seconds into overtime to power the Penguins to a 4-2-1 record. Malkin netted the 11th regular-season overtime goal of his NHL career (all w/ PIT) to move into a tie with Mario Lemieux for the most in franchise history.
MAPLE LEAFS, BLUE JACKETS ALSO IMPROVE TO 5-1-0
In addition to the Golden Knights and Devils, the Maple Leafs and Blue Jackets also secured victories to improve to 5-1-0:
- Frederik Andersen turned aside all 30 shots he faced to backstop the Maple Leafs past the Capitals in their first meeting since the First Round of the 2017 Stanley Cup Playoffs. The Maple Leafs have won at least five of their first six games to begin a season for the ninth time in their 100-year history and the third time in the past 36 years (last: 5-1-0 in 2013-14 and 6-0-0 in 1993-94).
- The Blue Jackets scored four times in the second period en route to their fourth consecutive win. Elias notes that the Blue Jackets won five of their first six games of a season for the second time in franchise history (also 2009-10: 5-1-0).
