Play For a Cure Returns—Bigger Than Ever!
One of Canada’s most successful cancer research fundraising events is back this week—and it’s bigger, better, and more inspiring than ever.
What is Play For a Cure?
What began as a modest Pro-Am hockey event—pairing a few ex-NHLers with local rec league heroes—has evolved into a powerful three-day celebration of sport, science, and community. This is more than just hockey—it’s hope in action. Here’s what’s on tap this week:
Thursday May 8 – Cancer Symposium + Draft Party at Caesars Windsor
We kick off with a Cancer Symposium hosted by none other than Jennifer Jones, past President of Rotary International. The event will feature insights from Dr. André Veillette, Executive Director of the Terry Fox Research Institute’s Marathon of Hope Cancer Centre Network, along with top local cancer researchers.
If you or someone you love has been touched by cancer—and you want to hear how we’re fighting back—this is for you.
Later that evening, we shift gears to the Draft Party at Caesars Windsor, where our slate of NHL and Female pros will be matched with local players in an unforgettable night of celebration and camaraderie.
Friday May 9 – Full Day of Hockey + All-Star Game
The action moves to Vollmer Complex for a full day of hockey. Friday night’s All-Star Game is a can’t-miss event, featuring stars like Adam Graves, Matt Barnaby, and Meghan Agosta.
Also on Friday, don’t miss the high-energy Woody’s Hoodies Shoot-Out, starring YouTube sensation Zac Bell, the brand-new Howie’s Hockey Tape Mascot, Windsor Spitfire Bomber, and a cast of former NHLers and Olympians bringing the fun.
Saturday May 10 – Girls Skill for a Cure
Saturday features the Girls Skill For A Cure session—an empowering event led by some of the greatest women’s hockey players in Canadian history. Future stars will have the chance to sharpen their skills and gain insight from Hall of Famers and Olympians.
Why It Matters
To date, Play For a Cure has raised nearly $2 million for cancer research—with every dollar staying right here in our community to support local scientists, patients, and programs. This is what happens when sports, science, and heart come together.
