RED WINGS HIRE SHAWN HORCOFF AS DIRECTOR OF PLAYER DEVELOPMENT
The Detroit Red Wings have hired Shawn Horcoff as Director of Player Development. Additionally, the team announced that Jiri Fischer is transitioning to a new role in player evaluation.
Horcoff, 37, is a veteran of 1,008 NHL games since 2000-01, totaling 511 points (186-325-511) and 624 penalty minutes. He spent most of his NHL career with the Edmonton Oilers (2000-13), serving as team captain from 2010-13 and producing a career-high 73 points (22-51-73) in 2005-06 while helping the Oilers reach the Stanley Cup Final. Horcoff also spent two seasons with the Dallas Stars (2013-15) and played for the Anaheim Ducks in the 2015-16 campaign. A 2008 NHL All-Star, Horcoff was originally a fourth-round pick (99th overall) of the Oilers in the 1998 NHL Entry Draft.
The Trail, British Columbia, native previously spent time in Michigan while skating with the Michigan State Spartans for four seasons, racking up 152 points (50-102-152) in 155 games from 1996-00. The Spartans were two-time CCHA champions (1998 and 2000) during Horcoff’s collegiate career, which he capped off by winning the CCHA Player of the Year and Best Defensive Forward Award in 1999-00. He was also a Hobey Baker Award finalist as the top player in college hockey and was named to the CCHA All-Academic Team for the second consecutive season. Horcoff also represented Canada three times on the international circuit at the IIHF World Championship, winning two gold medals and one silver.
