Red Wings Weekend Review October 22 2017

The third week of the NHL season is over and the Detroit Red Wings finished the week 0-3-1 with losses to the Tampa Bay Lightning, Vancouver Canucks and Toronto Maple leaves. The overtime loss came at the hands of the Washington Capitals. They currently sit in fourth place in the Atlantic Division and hold the second wildcard position in the Eastern Conference.

Week Three Scores:

Tampa Bay 3, Detroit 2

Toronto 6, Detroit 3

Washington 4, Detroit 3

Vancouver 4, Detroit 1

Week Four Schedule

Buffalo – Tuesday

Tampa Bay – Thursday

Florida – Saturday

Highlights:

Mike Green – Green continues to put up numbers from the blueline. He currently leads the team in points and assists. As Detroit continues to slide out of a playoff spot Green, who is in the final year of his contract and unlikely to fit into the Wing’s salary and future needs, make net a good return for Detroit at the trade deadline.

Andreas Athanasiou – After holding out for the first three weeks of the season, Athanasiou agreed to terms on a one year, $1.3 million dollar contract. He will likely debut at some point during week four after clearing up visa issues, passing his physical and getting a couple practices under his belt.

Riley Sheahan – Sheahan will always hold the distinction of scoring the final goal at Joe Louis Arena. His two goals in the final game last season came after failing to score the entire year and setting an NHL record for the most shots on goal in a season before registering a goal as a forward. After not producing any points in a fourth line role, Sheahan was moved to the Pittsburgh Penguins to make cap space for Athanasiou. Sheahan will likely be the third line center in Pittsburgh and will likely see an offensive resurgence.
