Saints Soccer Win in Hamilton
The St. Clair College varsity soccer teams were on the road on Saturday in Hamilton to face the Mohawk Mountaineers.
On a wet and rainy day the Saints came away with 2 convincing wins.
The women defeated the Mountaineers by a score of 2-0. In an evenly played first half St. Clair took the lead on a goal by Kristen Melo in extra time. Both keepers had 4 shots on goal in the first half while both teams had 7 shot attempts in the first half. The Saints played better in the 2nd half but did not put the game out of reach until Melanie Daniel scored in the 88th minute. St. Clair outshot Mohawk 8-6 in the second half and had 12 shot attempts compared to 10 for the Mountaineers. Alexandria Samping earned the win and clean sheet.
With the win the Saints improved to 5 wins and a tie on the season. Mohawk’s record fell to 3 wins and 3 losses. The St. Clair women are next in action on Tuesday at 5:00 pm when they travel to London to take on the first place Fanshawe Falcons. The Falcons are ranked 2nd in Ontario and 6th in Canada while the Saints are ranked 5th in Ontario.
The St. Clair men defeated Mohawk 1-0. On a day when the Saints were not at their best they managed to pull off the win. The game was scoreless in the first half with Mohawk out shooting St. Clair 4-1 and holding a 9-4 edge with shot attempts. The Saints scored the winning goal one minute into the second half on a nice goal by Leighton Speechley-Price. Mohawk dominated play for the rest of the game but keeper Shane Beaton was outstanding turning aside several great chances. In the second half the Mohawk outshot Saints 9-5 and had 13 shot attempts compared to 8 for St. Clair.
The win improved the Saint’s record to 5 wins and a loss. Mohawk now have 3 wins and 3 losses on the season. The St. Clair men’s next match is on Wednesday at 5:00 pm when travel to London to take on the Fanshawe Falcons. Fanshawe is tied for first place in the OCAA West Division with St. Clair and are ranked 4th in Ontario and 14th in Canada while the Saints are ranked 3rd in Ontario and 11th in Canada.
