Saints Volleyball Recap February 13 2023

St. Clair Men’s Volleyball Headed to Playoffs

The St. Clair men’s volleyball team wrapped up their OCAA regular season schedule this past weekend on the road in the GTA area.

The men were in Etobicoke on Saturday night to take on the Humber College Hawks. The Saints fell to the Hawks 3-0. Set scores for Humber were 25-20, 25-11 and 25-23. Rookie outside hitter Kale Wilkinson (Windsor; Riverside) had a solid game with 8 kills on 16 attempts, 1 service ace, and 3 digs. Rookie outside hitter Eric Glos (Tecumseh; Tecumseh Vista) had a good game as well with 7 kills, 2 service aces, 1 stuff blocks and 5 digs.

With the win Humber’s record improved to 13-5. The Hawks are ranked 6th in Ontario.

On Sunday afternoon, the Saints were in Oakville to take on the Sheridan College Bruins in a game that had no impact on the final standings for either squad. Set scores for Sheridan were 25-18, 25-17, and 25-16.

With the win Sheridan ended their season with a record of 7-11.

With the losses on the weekend St. Clair ends the regular season with a record of 8-10 and in 7th place in the tough West Division. The regular season was a huge improvement for the Saints who went 1-8 in the COVID shortened season last year and missed the playoffs.

The Saints will now travel to Canadore College (2nd East Division) in North Bay to take on the Panthers on Saturday at 6 pm. The winner will advance to the OCAA Championship from February 23-25 at Fanshawe College.

St. Clair Women’s Volleyball Split on the Road to End Regular Season

The St. Clair women’s volleyball team wrapped up their OCAA regular season schedule this past weekend on the road in the GTA area and came away with a split.

The women were in Etobicoke on Saturday night to take on the top ranked Humber College Hawks. The Saints got off to a solid start losing a tight first set 25-22 but bouncing back to take the second set 25-22. Humber took over from that point winning the third set 25-17 and the fourth 25-9 to win the match 3-1. Second year outside hitter Kiana Huggins (London; Saunders) led the way offensively for St. Clair with 13 kills, 2 service aces, and 9 digs. Rookie middle Geneva Huisman (Amherstburg; Marantha Christian) had a solid game as well with 7 kills, 3 service aces and 2 stuff blocks.

With the win’s Humber’s record improved to 18-0. The Hawks are ranked 1st in Ontario and 2nd in Canada.

On Sunday afternoon, the Saints were in Oakville to take on the Sheridan College Bruins and came away with a 3-1 win. Set scores for St. Clair were 25-19, 18-25, 25-12 and 25-14. Huggins had another big game with 11 kills, 1 service ace and 6 digs. Third year outside hitter Chantel DeVlugt (Wyoming; LCCVI) had a great game as well with 11 kills on 20 attempts along with a stuff block. Rookie setter Emma Clements (Windsor; Holy Names) had a solid all around game with 3 kills, 8 services aces, 35 assists and 1 stuff block.

With loss Sheridan fell to 2-16 on the season.

With the split on the weekend, St. Clair’s ends the regular season with a record of 14-4 and tied for 2nd place in the West Division. The Saints are currently ranked 3rd in Ontario.

The Saints will now host a playoff game on Saturday, February 18th at 3 pm at the Sportsplex against Algonquin College (5th East Division). The winner will advance to the OCAA Championship from February 23-25 at Sheridan College.
