SCC Saints Volleyball Season Opens this Weekend.

St. Clair College women’s and men’s volleyball teams open OCAA regular season schedule this Saturday at home against Redeemer University College Royals.

The women will take to the floor at 2 pm. The Saints had a successful first season last year under the guidance of Head Coach Jimmy El-Turk. St. Clair finished the regular season with a record of 10-8 in the OCAA West Division and tied for 4th place.  The Saints made the playoffs but lost their match to qualify for provincials. Redeemer also finished the season with a record of 10-8. St. Clair will be hosting the OCAA Championship at the Sportsplex from February 24-26 with the Saints earning an automatic spot.

The Saints return key veterans in 3rd year Outside Hitter Kaila Crough and 4th year Outside Hitter Taylor Fitzgerald. “We have a great mix of veteran leadership and energetic youth on the roster. We have a roster of 13 athletes who will all be asked to contribute in their own unique way. Our focus is to the develop the athletes as whole, knowing that we have the luxury of focusing on performing at the Provincial Championships this year in front of our home crowd,” stated El-Turk.

The men will take on the Royals at 4 pm. The men just missed the playoffs last year after winning OCAA Silver the year before; their first ever medal in men’s volleyball.  The Saints had a record of  6-12 finishing one spot out of the playoffs in 7th spot with a rookie laden lineup. Redeemer finished in 5th place last season with a record of 11-7.

Expectations are much higher this year with eight returning players and a couple of key recruits on the roster. Joining the Saints is Outside Hitter Robert Carter who will be playing alongside his brother Stephan from Wallacetown, Ontario. Another key addition is Outside Hitter Alex Vukovic. Vukovic spent 2 seasons with Windsor Lancers and was named an OUA All Star. Coach Robert Lynch who is entering his 8thseason is looking forward to the season. “Along with a few key additions and our base of returning players our goal is to make the playoffs this year and win an OCAA medal. The league is expected to be very tight so every match will be huge for us.”
