Windsor Spitfires Take Five of Possible Six Points in Busy and Productive Weekend
The Windsor Spitfires picked up five out of a possible six points last weekend as the team won two of three games while dropping the other contest in overtime. Windsor has another busy three games in three nights weekend that begins with a home game on Thursday night against the Owen Sound Attack.
Following a rare Thursday (March 3) night with no home game at the WFCU Centre, the Spitfires traveled up the 401 to their hectic weekend by taking on the London Knights on Friday night at the Budweiser Gardens.
The Knights jumped out to a 3-0 lead after two periods on goals by Denver Barkey, Sean McGurn and Isaiah George before the Spitfires struck for three goals in just over two minutes span early in the third period on markers by Ryan Abraham, Josh Currie and Oliver Peer. The teams then exchanged goals later in the third frame with Antonio Stranges scoring for the Knights and Jacob Maillet replying for the Spitfires to send the game into overtime. Gerard Keane scored with just under 90 seconds left in extra time to give the Knights the 5-4 win.
Matt Onuska made 37 saves for the Spitfires while Tilbury’s Brett Brochu made 29 stops t the other end to pick up the win in goal.
In the first of back-to-back games at the WFCU Centre, the Spitfires hosted the Sault Ste Marie Greyhounds on Saturday night, March 5 and came away with a 7-3 win over their West Division rivals.
Wyatt Johnston and Pasqualle Zito both scored a goal and added two assists apiece to pace the Spitfires offensively while Abraham scored twice and Currie, Ethan Miedema and Louka Henault added single markers. Cole MacKay scored twice for the Sault with Bryce McConnell-Barker notching the other goal for the visitors.
Onuska made 36 saves to pick up the win while Tucker Tynan and Charlie Schenkel both allowed three goals and combined to make 18 stops at the other end of the ice.
Special teams went a long way in determining the outcome of the game as the ‘Hounds’ league-leading powerplay scored just twice in nine opportunities playing with the extra player and the Spits, with the second best powerplay efficiency in the OHL, managing to capitalize once in four extra player chances.
The Spitfires then played hosted the Knights in their third game in an afternoon game to close out another busy weekend with a 6-4 win.
Daniel D’Amico scored twice for the Spitfires who received single markers from Nicholas DeAngelis, Andrew Perrott, Matthew Maggio and Zito. Abraham continued his stellar play on the weekend by chipping in with three assists.
Stranges, Barkey, Luke Evangelista and former Spitfire Cody Morgan all scored for the Knights. Brochu made 24 saves while Onuska, playing in his third straight game for the Spitfires, turned in a sparkling 39-stop performance against his former club.
The Spitfires host the Owen Sound Attack on Thursday night before hitting the road to play back-to-back games against the Erie Otters on Friday and Saturday nights as the team plays their second straight three games in three nights weekend.
