Windsor Spitfires Stun Saint John Sea Dogs 3-2 in Memorial Cup Opener
Aaron Luchuk and Jeremy Bracco both had a goal and an assist and Michael DiPietro made 20 saves as the Windsor Spitfires stunned the Saint John Sea Dogs 3-2 in the the opening game of the 2017 Memorial Cup at the WFCU Centre Friday night.
Jeremiah Addison had the other goal for the Spitfires (1-0) who showed little rust while playing their first game in over six weeks since being eliminated in the opening round of the Ontario Hockey League play-offs earlier this spring.
Thomas Chabot and Nathan Noel scored within a span of 24 seconds late in the third period for the Sea Dogs (0-1) but they could not find the equalizer even with netminder Callum Booth pulled numerous times late in the game. Booth also made 20 saves in the game.
The win extended the Spitfires’ winning streak to nine games in the tournament following the team’s back-to-back titles in 2009 and 2010.
The tournament resumes Saturday afternoon when the Ontario Hockey League champion Erie Otters take on the Western Hockey League champion Seattle Thunderbirds at the WFCU Centre.
The Spitfires return to action Sunday night when they play the Thunderbirds.
