WINDSOR Spitfires win two of three weekend games
The Windsor Spitfires continued their winning ways by winning two out of three games this past weekend (Nov. 5-6, 2022). Windsor did suffer their second loss in regulation time this weekend but that game was sandwiched between two wins.
Oliver Peer scored twice and Matt Onuska made 25 saves as the Spitfires defeated the Sarnia Sting 5-3 Thursday, November, 3 at the WFCU Centre. Colton Smith, who was making his return to the Windsor lineup after missing the team’s previous two games due to a lower body injury, Jacob Maillet and Alex Christopoulos all added scored once for the Spitfires (9-1-3-0) while Sandis Vilmanis, Nolan Burke and Marko Sikic replied for the Sting (8-6-1-0). Ben Gaudreau made 29 stops for the visitors.
In addition to his goal, Mallet added a pair of assists for the Spitfires who defeated the Sting for the second time in three games so far this season. Sarnia emerged with a 2-1 overtime victory at the WFCU Centre in the season opener for both teams on October 1.
After a rare Friday night off, Owen Beck scored twice and Brice Cooke, James Hardie, Kasper Larsen and Charlie Callaghan added single markers at the Mississauga Steelheads doubled-up the Spitfires 6-3 at the Paramount Fine Foods Centre.
Michael Renwick, Christopher O’Flaherty and Christopoulos all replied for the Spitfires (9-2-3-0) who lost their second game in regulation time this season. Alessio Beglieri made 25 saves for the Steelheads (9-3-1-0) while Onuska made 33 stops at the other end of the ice for the Spitfires.
Returning to action just 24 hours following their loss in the Greater Toronto Area, rookie netminder Joey Costanzo made 32 saves as the Spitfires defeated the Kingston Frontenacs 6-3 at the WFCU Centre on Sunday, November 6. The win was his third in as many games for Costanzo, who was named the third star of the game against the Fronts.
Ethan Miedema, Maillet, Renwick, Christopoulos, Tomas Hebek, with the first of his OHL career, and Matthew Maggio all scored once to spread out the scoring for the Spitfires (10-2-3-0)) against the Frontenacs (8-6-0-1) who received goals from Maddox Callens, Francesco Arcuri and Matthew Soto.
Mason Vaccari made 23 saves for Kingston.
The Spitfires return to action Thursday night when they host the Peterborough Petes at the WFCU Centre. Opening face-off is set for 7:05 pm
