Spitfires Winning Streak Ends at Nine Games
Denver Barkey scored twice, including the game winner in overtime, as the London Knights edged the Windsor Spitfires 4-3 at the Budweiser Gardens in a Family Day matinee contest Monday February 20, that featured the top two teams in the Ontario Hockey League’s Western Conference.
Jacob Julien scored the other two goals for London while Alex Christopoulos, Michael Renwick and Oliver Peer all replied for Windsor. Belle River native Brett Brochu made 24 saves to pick up the win in goal for the Knights while Matt Onuska made 26 saves for the Spitfires.
The loss snapped the Spitfires’ winning streak at nine games while the win elevated the Knights into a first place tie with Windsor atop the Western Conference standings. Both teams have 79 points with 14 games remaining in the 2022-2023 OHL regular season.
The Spitfires kicked off their week with a 6-5 overtime win over the Flint Firebirds on Thursday, February 16 at the WFCU Centre. Brett Harrison scored three goals, including the winner in extra time while Christopoulos had a pair of markers and Matthew Maggio scored once. Onuska, playing his first game since January 6 after being sidelined with an undisclosed illness and a recurring lower body injury, made 37 saves in his return to action.
Kaden Pitre, Gavin Hayes, Ethan Hayes, Dmitry Kuzmin and Amadeus Lombardi all replied for the Firebirds while Nathan Cranley made 26 saves for the visitors.
Two nights later, Jacob Maillet scored the overtime winner as the Spitfires edged the Mississauga Steelheads 3-2 at the WFCU Centre. Colton Smith and Renwick added singles for Windsor while Porter Martone and James Hardie both replied for the Steelheads.
Ryerson Leenders made 26 saves for Mississauga while Joey Costanzo, who was called for a two-minute interference penalty in the second period, made 21 saves for Windsor.
The Spitfires return to action on Thursday night when they play the Peterborough Petes on February 23 in the first game of a three game road trip that also have stops in Ottawa on Friday night (Feb. 24) and Kingston (Feb. 26) for a 2 pm afternoon game. Windsor’s next home game is Thursday, March 2 when they host the Knights at the WFCU Centre.
