St. Clair Golf Teams Off to a Good Start at OCAA Championship

The St. Clair College men’s and women’s varsity golf teams got off to a good start at the OCAA Championship on Monday. The Championship is being hosted by St. Lawrence College at Cataraqui Golf and Country Club in Kingston from September 29 to October 2.

Rookie Shannon Coffey (Windsor; FJ Brennan) had a great start to the Championship shooting an 82 on the par 72 course. She is currently tied for 3rd place alone but only 1 stroke back of first place. The Saints as a team are in 5th place out of 6 female teams but only 7 strokes out of a Bronze medal. Rookie Meaghan Schaafsma (Essex; Essex District) shot a 102 and is in 12th place. For the women 3 players play with the top 2 scores counting. The Saints only have 2 women taking part in the event this year.

The Saints men are currently sitting in 7th place out of 11 teams in the 3 day event with a team score of 316. Five players play for each team with the best 4 scores counting each day. There will be a cut after day two into two divisions with the top 6 teams qualifying for Division I.

Leading the way for St. Clair was 2nd year player Derick Hare (Windsor; FJ Brennan) who shot a 5 over 75 which puts him in a tie for 14th place out of 55 golfers with 2 more rounds to play. First year player Andrew Pillon (St. Joachim; Belle River District) also had a solid round shooting a 6 over 76. Other team members and scores for St. Clair were Brett Harrison-82 (3rd Year; Essex; Essex District), Josh Chilcoat-83 (1st Year; LaSalle; Sandwich Secondary) and Simon Desmarais- 90 (2nd Year; Windsor; FJ Brennan).

The Saints are coached by head coach Kevin Corriveau and assistant coach Heather MacKenzie.
